The unit is basically functional; however, you will really need the holster (which cost extra) and then the strap(s)and you will need two and they are sold individually (which cost extra). It is pretty pricey once you add it all up. I would also agree with other reviews that the pen\pencil holder is poor at best. One of the kids toy versions would work just as well

I love this gadget. I'm a volunteer diver for Mystic Aquarium and Institute for Exploration. On most of our dives the divers interact with the tourists, especially the children. Using this slate I can communicate more affectively and the audience really responds to what I write. Sometimes they will write messages back with a pen and paper. It's great fun!!!

I loved this before we tried to dive with it! On the second dive it came out of the holster and floated away. A fellow diver rescued it but the magnetic pencil was gone, and now it is useless. If it could be made to stay in the holster, it would be greatly improved. There also needs to be some way to secure the pencil other than the little string. Lastly, it's a little too large. However, I think with a few changes it could be a great product.

This slate writes better and is considerably easier to read than traditional slates. It uses a magnet for penn tip to attract magnetized "grains".
The eraser slider is a great feature for longer conversations but ended up being a nuisance because mine didn't lock securely in place which resulted in some lost compass directions I jotted down.
Also be aware that this slate is very bulky and didn't fit in my wife's jacket BC pocket (I wear a back-style). Hence the "dangling factor".
I would not recommend this product even if you can live with the bulkiness due the poor quality.
The surface you "write on" is made of a thin see-through plastic sheet which punctured after only two days of usage.
I'm going back to my old slate again...

No diver should ever be without this. It's so much easier to communicate with a dive buddy with this than hand signals. It allows easy and unambiguious communication. It's worth every penny!!

The whole unit dangles alot. Its a 50/50 thing, I felt it was imprtant to have a flex cord that two drives could use the item for communication. However, the item still dangled around a bit almost getting in the way of the dive at times. It's one of those things that when I didn't have it I wish I did, but when I had it I almost didn't have a use for it.

Slate is large and easily seen. Much easier to use than a pencil slate. No missed communication with using this slate!
