During my first few dives I had some bad experiences that made me want to stay on the more cautious side of things. (gauge failure causing out of air at 90') I bought a few additional items that made me feel more confident in the water - you never know when something bad will happen so you need to be prepared. I happened to see an instructor wear one - he was older and had more dives under his belt than anyone I knew and if he used it - I thought - why not try it.
The dive alert is a fun device to get the attention of your partner - mine wears a hood and still can hear it. (make sure you let them know what it is or they will think they're making the noise) The horn just gives me peace of mind that if I need it - it is there. I hope I never have to use it.
Overall I didn't find it too bulky, and if you're wondering - The DA1 is for most BCD with a standard plug - the other two are for odd connectors and for high air flow with air 2. Most people will need the DA1.
I'd recommend it because it doesn't take up much space but if you ever needed it - it's easier to use than a tank banger - not as embarrassing as a shaker - and has two functions. Well worth the money.

First the one negative... I own 3 of these devices for myself, wife & daughter. One of them stopped making underwater sound and my local dive shop where I purchased it got it replaced for free.
Also to comment on the other review that the underwater sound is not very loud. I recently found that it is 4 times louder underwater if you make sure the air bubble travel upward during your signal. The device pointing downward creates bubbles that immediately work against the sound of the device.
Now for the huge Life Saving Story!!!
I was diving Barracuda Reef on North Cozumel in Jan 2011. The underwater current was a very strong 4 knot current and the surface had about a 6 knot current. Needless to say the boat was at least 3/4 of a mile away with choppy seas. Boat was barely visible on the horizon. I told my dive partners to cover their ears and I let my dive alert blast a few times. I had already previously inflated my 6' bright orange signal bouy. The deck hand later told me that he heard my device first and then located my surface boey. I highly recommend both!!!

I soak my bc after each use and let the fresh water flow throught the dive alert. I have had no malfunctions on the item and have over a thousand dives on the alert. Is has a few scraches but what doesent after that mileage.

I have now had to send my unit back twice. First it wouldn't emit noise underwater due to sand infiltration. Now, the dial won't move from Air (Surface) to Water (Underwater). I wish I would have stuck to the base unit. I am going to get a new basic unit as I do not have faith in the Plus any longer.

Comments about Dive Alert Dive Alert Plus:
Disappointing. Surface horn is great, but the UW horn is a waste of money. My buddy rarely hears it and he actively listens for it. No-one else has a clue.
The performance has has always been average and I have persisted for a year and a half.. no longer!
Sorry guys, great idea but still needs work.

Comments about Dive Alert Dive Alert Plus:
This is a perfect item, with the H2O feature, you can get your buddies attention easy, many reviews say it isn't loud enough, you must be freakin deaf...ease up on the IPOD sessions. I have never had any of my buddies unable to hear it. The air feature is great, we do a lot of spearfishing and it is perfect to signal the boat for a pick up when sharks are around, so you can keep your gun pointed below!

The entire reason I purchased this unit is because of it's use.I was impressed with the decibel level of the air horn portion of this device. This unit works well on the surface but under water uses vast amount of air to function.

I'm glad I bought it. I use it all the time when I dive and it has become an integral part of my BCD. It is great underwater to call your buddy and on the surface the sound carries a long way.

I wish I had this thing when I accidentally forgot my SMB on a dive and surfaced far from the boat!!
Can't give it 5 flags until I try it in action for real life - and it saves me - but above water no doubt you WILL be heard. Piercing loud noise. The WARNING says do not blow this above water without protecting your ears - without doubt ALL of you will at least try it once (as did I, I was curious). I blew it in my apartment haha and yes, protect your ears because it IS very loud! Happy to know that. In real life, they suggest you submerge your head underwater and blow the horn above the water surface. Warn your buddy/buddies!!
The 'buzzer' below water is average. As in other posts, you must be nearby your target to attract attention. I prefer using my underwater metal shaker/ringer so I won't waste air but the underwater buzzing function, though not as functional, is a nice 'extra' feature.
If it saves your/my life, it's worth it. Buy one for peace of mind.

Comments about Dive Alert Dive Alert Plus:
Like many others, I religiously research a product before dropping $$ on it, especially one pertaining to diving. When this unit came out a couple years back, I was interested but hesitated to buy it based on some poor reviews I had seen online. Eventually though, I decided to give it a shot and thus far have been impressed. The H2O signal is definitely loud enough and hasn't yet failed to get my dive buddy's attention. I find that it helps to acclimate the other diver to the noise immediately upon entering the water as the sound isn't as distinct as some (say metal clanging on metal) and could get confused for ambient noise on heavy surf conditions. The surface signal is deafening and will be an invaluable asset in an emergency situation.

Comments about Dive Alert Dive Alert Plus:
I own one of these but this particular model was purchased as a Christmas present for one of my dive buddies. The unit is well made, works well above and below the water. My only issue is when you attach this to your Air2 you have to use your hand to help hold the regulator in your mouth unless you turn your head a few degrees. I simply purchased another inflator hose and mounted it on that hose. The knob to select surface or subsurface is easy to use. The horn is extremely loud and could damage your ears if not careful. The underwater quacker is loud enough and gets peoples attention. It makes others feel safe to know they have a way to signal if the need arises....

Comments about Dive Alert Dive Alert Plus:
I was impressed with the decibel level of the air horn portion of this device. The underwater portion is very disappointing as it produces almost no sound. My buddies could not hear it through their hoods even when they were within a few feet of me underwater. I wish I'd purchased just the basic version w/out the underwater feature.
Delivery was right on time and the item arrived in perfect condition.

Comments about Dive Alert Dive Alert Plus:
I had the Original Dive Alert and was very pleased with it. When I changed to a ScubaPro Air2 Inflater Regulator I has to get a new signal because the Air2 needs a Hi-Flow connector. I decided to "upgrade" to the Dive Alert Plus.
1. The construction is pretty flimsy and I am afraid it will eventually break apart with routine handling.
2. I have a harder time using this device than the original "Surface Only" Dive Alert as the ergonomics are poor. The device is fairly bulky and can also interfere with the use of the power inflater and alternate air source.
3. The real show stopper is how weak the underwater sound is. The underwater horn is really just a bubble-maker. A tank pinger makes a louder sound. If you want a well built air-powered underwater noise maker try an Aquatec Scub Alert Under Water Signaling Device (a quacker).
I plan to return this piece of junk and get an original Dive Alert.

Comments about Dive Alert Dive Alert Plus:
I must agree with the other two reviewers. On the surface it's fine. Underwater its just a waste of back gas. I have verified my own experience with two other divers who were dumb enough to buy them. Given its single functionality (surface) it's too big and too expensive. Mine's going in the trash.

Comments about Dive Alert Dive Alert Plus:
We replaced a faulty Dive alert with this one so it could be heard above and below the water. It is not as audible on the surface as the original, and barely audible under water. I am greatly disappointed and would not spend the money on this product.

Comments about Dive Alert Dive Alert Plus:
The DiveAlert Plus is a new item and, although we always endeavor to supply a perfect product, it may be that some problems crept into the initial orders. We have had very few returns, so it is valuable and helpful to receive your feedback. The number one problem we have seen is sand & grit. Anyone dissatisfied with his or her DiveAlert Plus should contact us, the manufacturer, and give us an opportunity to correct the problem. [@]

Would have to agree with the other review of this product. I bought this for dive instructing and have to say I am extremely disappointed with it, the surface signaling device works great, but underwater is just a stream of bubbles. Dont think anyone heard it - even me!

Comments about Dive Alert Dive Alert Plus:
The above water horn work superbly, but the entire reason I purchased this unit is because of it's use below water and it is very sorry underwater. I used it in 5,15,and 20 feet of fresh and brackish water and it didn't do anything but blow bubbles. Very unhappy with this product!
