In the early days of cave diving, reels were not available to buy off the shelf. Divers used anything they could, including empty electrical wire spools. When exploring, divers would pay out the line and if they didn't empty the spool it would be left in the cave for the next dive. The reel position the handle on top, which helps divers who use a handheld light to hold both the light and the reel in one hand, freeing the other hand to work the reel. Reel has large tension adjustment control knob which is easy to use with gloved hands.

The line will tangle itself if you reel it in too quick and unless have enough visibility to see what you are doing this will always happen. I'm sure the reels over $100 create less tangles, but at this price, the construction and functionality supersedes the hassle.

This is a good, compact reel that is functional. However, the reel is small and the line is thin, which can result in it tangling easily. Best use is for a surface marker only.

We used this in poor visability doing deep wreck diving,it provided easy use and of course an easy way of retracing our path back to the starting point. The only downside was, that there probably was too much line on the reel when the line became wet the line became too large for the reel, easy solution I cut a few metres off the line, problem solved.

I tested this product while wreck diving. First of all: The reel is too small to be useful: The pin you use to spin the reel is too close to the "tension adjustment knob" and too short to be effectively used with diving gloves. The tension adjuster knob is a toy you will never use and doesn't really do it's job anyway. The little locking mechanism is nice for storage, but in the way underwater: It's exactly where you would put the finger to add tension on the spool. In addition: This spool is only suitable for right handed divers. In a confined environment where you have to switch the reel from hand to hand once in a while, this one is unnecessarily difficult to use.
