I purchased this package thinking I would get into underwater photography. I was glad I did cause this camera is about as turn key as they come. The only issue I have seen is battery life due to the fact it used AA's but a good set of rechargeable's took care of that.

I bought this for my recent trip to the Galapagos Islands. Overall, I'm quite happy with the camera for both land and underwater use.

On the land, all settings on auto, it works great for catching still or slow moving subjects.

The response time from pressing the button until the photo is taken is listed as 370ms. It turns out, that's very slow. Trying to capture a bird in flight, or a whale as it breaches, or a fish before it darts away is near impossible.

Underwater, snorkeling, I had some problems. As you go deeper underwater, the light color changes - it looses the red and gains more blue. The camera has a "sea" setting to compensate for this. If you're about 8+ feet down, you need this setting; if you're at the surface you don't. It's a little difficult to change this setting, so while snorkeling, going from the surface to several feet down, some photos are good, some are too blue, some are too red. I would expect to not have this problem while SCUBA diving, but haven't tried it yet. Rules in the Galapagos prevented me from using the flash; that might also help solve this problem.

The underwater housing worked fine. It's not too heavy or bulky, and the buttons are easy to press, even with gloves. I used a silicon sealer for the O-ring (as instructed). I was never able to observe any moisture inside the housing after each snorkeling trip. I used a descant in the housing; it lasted for many trips before turning from blue to slightly pinkish.

The 4 descant capsules that came with the camera, however, were already all used up when they arrived. I was able to pick up a pack of new descants for cheap at a local dive shop.

The camera comes with a wrist strap. This is great for use on land, but does not fit into the underwater housing. It's a bit difficult to put the strap onto the camera (threading it through a small hole), so switching back and forth between land and undersea use takes time.

I would not recommend this camera for a whale watching trip, sporting events, or anywhere that you only have a split second to capture the photo, but it is a good, light-weight, versatile camera that takes high-res photos both on land and underwater.

Do not bother to buy the closeup lenses. They are intended for the 500 and below. Only buy the Wide angle with holder. The weight for the strobe is useful as it is bouyant.

The camera performs great underwater once you get your exposure fine tuned. Pictures easily overexposed or underexposed until you get used to it. I have used it snorkeling and diving both day and night and it performed very well. It takes some great vidoes while snorkeling during the day with nominal brightness. Batteries dont last long so buy an extra. On land I was not impressed. Overall great camera for the recreational diver
