Comments about Akona Akona AKB188 10 lbs Roller Bag:

I just received my Akona AKB188 Roller bag that I purchased from Leisurepro today, but I will return it unless I can easily fix the deficiencies (but why should I). 1. I liked the overall design of the bag; the size and weight, but the construction will just not cut it for the money. The corners at the top and bottom edges covering the hard material underneath are just standard nylon material. The first trip through baggage handling will abrade through the light weight nylon. This WILL HAPPEN. Why haven't they considered a simple reinforcing pads or a stiffer material on these corners???. 2. The two feet opposite the wheels are loose right out of the box. Looking on the inide shows the rivets are not completely set. The washers are almost pulled over the loose rivet. I could pull the washer off with just my fingerail. These feet WILL BE knocked off the first time it sees ANY force. 3. The main compartment Zipper does not have a simple lock eye to allow a TSA Lock. How can this be missing with the value of dive equipment, and very poor Third World baggage handers???? We have had batteries and small things lifted from unlocked zipper pockets that are easily opened. TSA locks are not foolproof, but its at least a deterrant. We have used Akona bags exclusively for 6 years. Their mesh boat bags are the BEST! We have purchased over 10 Akona bags for different uses, but for [$], this bag is not going to make it through it's first trip. I have $50 roller bags from discount stores that are constructed better. They have a better chance of surviving the scuffs, and then who cares if they get trashed for 1/4 the price. I read the other reviews, but thought they were being a bit tough . . . they were not. These bags will not get past one trip without a corner tear! I do not think that should happen with a [$] bag! I will pay for quality, but this missed the mark by alot.Rick in RI

We own two of these bags and they are literally falling apart after just a few trips. They are not made by Akona as the same bag can be purchased under a number of different brands, such as L.L. Bass.

Comments about Akona Akona AKB188 10 lbs Roller Bag:

I bought this bag with the on board travel size because of a positive review in a magazine. I have to say I was disapointed with the performance from a typically great brand. I used it for my scuba gear on two vacations within 4 months from purchase. One was a weekend trip to the carribean, it worked great. The second trip was to Indoneasia. When I received my gear in indoneasia there was wear damage. The placement of the handle that the airlines use when loading and off loading luggage puts stress on the seams. A 4 inch hole was left where the seams seperated. I only packed 30 lbs in it, so with the bag the weight was about 40 lbs. It should have been able to handle it. When I returned to the states there was also a tare in another part of the bag.

Also a handle for the bottom of the bag would be helpful when lugging.

The other products that I have from Akona perform above expectation. The designers need to go back to the drawing board on this bag, good idea but does not perform to Akona standards.

Comments about Akona Akona AKB188 10 lbs Roller Bag:

I bought this bag with high hopes since I travel a lot (~200K miles/year) for business. The bag is sweet looking and stands up on its own to rest a weary traveler. It rolls smoothly as the wheel base has been smartly designed far apart. the handle feels week though it hasn't broken yet. During my first trip, the bag tore. The fabric looks very stressed in many places. Turns out that it looks this way because it is. I exchanged quickly and got a new bag. Wow, I'm happy. Ooops, not so fast. Within 4 trips, a zipper ripped off and the fabric is again tearing in a different spot. My LDS tried to blame the airlines. Hello??? This is travel folks, airline personnel will not be cautious. Design the bag to match the use. Akona didn't. They missed the boat here (this statement was intended). The idea is fantastic and I'm out [$] because of that great idea and some good shiny salesmanship. I won't spend the $/time to keep exchanging it. I need a gear bag. Very disappointed.

Comments about Akona Akona AKB188 10 lbs Roller Bag:

I had one of the older Akona bags which lasted quite some time and only wore out due to your typical baggage handling. Getting to some of the smaller islands in the world sometimes really limits the total weight of your checked bag. At 10 lbs empty, this bag is awesome. Only downside is that the fin pockets seem king of tight for full foot fins. I can fit a Backplate BC, regs, wetsuits, flashlights, mask, tool kit easily and still keep it under 50 lbs

This is the first dive bag that I've used that:
a) Weighs almost nothing but takes everything I need and b) Stands without falling over. My old bag would drive me nuts when travelling.

Good size/weight ratio, weak zippers

Comments about Akona Akona AKB188 10 lbs Roller Bag:

We bought one of these for my girlfriend as her travel bag for dive gear. The bag had a good design and size:weight ratio. However, while packing our gear to return from the first trip, one of the zippers broke off while she was closing it. The zipper was not metal but instead some sort of plastic or composite.

I highly recommend against this bag because of the weak zippers.

It Stands Up!!!
By KimInNBVerified Reviewer from Atlantic Canada on 2/19/2008

Good Value, stays in place
Cons:
Still a Bit Heavy
Best Uses:

Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Akona Akona AKB188 10 lbs Roller Bag:

Finally, a roller bag that stays standing up when I stop holding it in place!! My old bag was a roller/backpack and would tumble front-first to the floor if left alone for 1.2 seconds. This one is roomy enough for complete cold water gear (drysuit) and stays standing just like I always hoped it would.

At 10lbs it's still a bit heavy for airlines, but pay the overweight charges and get over it - you'll have fun diving, won't you???
