I've gone through about a dozen "back-up" lights looking for the right one at a low price: dependable LED, long battery life, solid build. They all fell apart after a few dives, except this one. I finally opted for two primaries, but recently decided to give this one a try. I have really tried to punish this thing, and it keeps on working. I lost it on a 125 foot wreck dive, but found it the next day still lit-up! Only complaint is the lens has scratched earlier than expected.

This is a decent light as a backup, though not super-bright. When used during the day, it has to be carefully directed to be used as a "peeker" for under ledges, etc., or it won't be effective, as it isn't that bright around the periphery. It would be much easier to use if it had an actual on/off switch. Instead, you turn the body of the light, as if you are tightening or loosening it (as you do when you open it or put in the batteries). This creates a real danger of opening and flooding the light when you are simply trying to turn it off. Not sure why it was designed this way. We bought two, and one flooded the first time it was used, even though it had never been turned on or off.

Comments about Princeton Tec, Impact XL Flashlight:
I used this on our most recent dive trip to Cozumel. It worked fine for the first three dives, but on the fourth dive I must have turned it just a little too far and it took on water and died. For the price, it is very nice but in the future I will purchase one that has a sealed on/off switch.

My light flooded on 1st dive

I used this light one time as a tool to peek under ledges for critters. Unfortunately, the light flooded and failed on it's very first dive to 90 feet. The cause of the malfunction was a defective housing that contains the LED electronics and contact spring. The housing uses two screws to keep the halves flush and allow the housing to contact the batteries when the top is twisted CCW. Since this housing wasn't allowing the spring to extend for battery contact it flooded when the top was turned far enough to initiate the LED to light.I recommend to verify that your lights spring loaded LED housing operate smoothly over its entire travel motion to enguage the contacts without exposing the o-ring.
