WILLIAM G You should -- but normally I carry on. However, my case has been to Afghanistan and back, and has also logged several catapults and arrested landings in the back of a jet on an aircraft carrier without any sign of damage to my Macbook Pro.
ZACHARY K Depends on ho much padding you can leave behind. IE an 11-inch macBook Air will be ultra-safe... a 17-inch dell....not so much.
In general, I would only put a laptop in check if it has an SSD. Vibrations like that are just too rough on traditional hard drives.
All that said, I have gate-checked my laptop in this case and it did just fine.
