Questions about this item:
Shopper Hello, sorry I ask again.. I'm 5'7' tall, 137lb, and usualy wear 31'' waist pants. I use 3mm, 5mm wet suit, and 6.5mm semi dry suit.
Which size should I choose among Small and Medium ?
and one more, does a small size of this Islander 2 have trim weight pockets in backside?
CARLETON P Hi,
Well, I'm 5'9" and 165 lbs and I bought a Medium and it fits me pretty good.
It sounds like your a little smaller all the way around so I would guess you would probably take a small.
There is a lot of adjustment so I don't think you will have a problem.
Yes it does have 2 Trim Weight Pockets on the back side attached to the the large tank strap.
Any other questions, feel free to ask.
Chip
PHILLIP B Deff a Med. Im 6' 180 with a 32' waist and wear a large with or without wetsuit. And i use a 7mil. Additionally..there are two small trim pockets on back. they are attatched to the tank strap and can be removed.
LEON R I'm sorry I returned it wasto small and bought a totally different BCD but I would look at the measurements on size chart and go next size up to accommodate your 6.5 semi dry I hope this helps you
ROLLAND F Personally I would error on the side of caution and go with the larger size as it is easier to deal with a slightly large size than to deal with too small. That being said, I am not qualified to size anything. I can attest to you from personal experience that Leisure Pro's Personal fit guarentee is for real. I have exchanged several its due to size issues without the slightest problem so if you buy you can be assured you will get the fit necessary. As for the back pouches I would think they are on all sizes as they would not be dependant on size. Personally both my wife and I have Islander 2s and we love them..no issues with stability that you might experience with a rear bladder BC. Hope this helps
FRED A I bought this BC for my son, who is 2 inches taller, but about 20 pounds lighter than you; and, he dives with at most a 3mm wetsuit. He wears a Medium quite comfortably. So it seems to me if you are heavier and wear thicker suits, you should definitely wear a Medium, not a small. The Medium definitely has the trim weight pockets, I don't know about the Small.
Jungho K I wear small in the ScubaPro Knighthawk BCD, what would be my size for this BCD? Thanks...
Jungho K Thanks all... I've made the decision to go with the Zeagle Stiletto...
Tora T FYR. I'm 5'4" 125 lbs. Wear S. It fits fine on the surface. A tiny little bit loose underwater(I velcro the cummerbund to tightest). I think S should fit you well.
SCOTT A I purchased the XL as my usual size and it worked fine for me. I am happy with the BC. Cannot comment on how it relates to the ScubaPro
Good Luck!
Jungho K Thanks... What size does your wife wear? I am 5'6" and 145lbs... If she wears an XS then I would probably wear a S...
KEN M This is my wife's BCD.
She is 5'6", Approx. 120 lbs.
It fits very nicely.
MAURICE W I wear a Large, but the Oceanic Islander seems to come big. I would try on a small and medium before deciding
rachel s does the lslander 2 have shoulder and hip dump valves or just shoulder?
GERASIMOS A It does have both shoulder and hip valves
PHILLIP B both. excellent bcd! had mine for 4 years. still love it
TIM S 1 hip dump.
left side
ROLLAND F Yes it has a manual lower valve on the left side in addition to the one on the shoulder.
FRED A It has two dumps, shoulder and lower rear. The picture is a little misleading as it appears you can pull a cord in the lower front of the BC to activate the rear dump but this is not accurate. You must pull the cord at the rear to activate the rear dump.
Shopper Hey guys. How do you fold it into small size??? I mean it's pretty light. But it really takes space.
LINDA C I have packed this in a carryon. Unbuckle shoulders and lay the back and shoulders down as flat as it will go. I bundle and stuff my wetsuit and skin (usually in one of those packing cubes) near the botttom of the BC and velcro the cummerbund over it. Fins are on their side on each side of the BC. Mask and xtra clothes (in another packing cube) on top of the back/ shoulder straps. I always carry my reg and camera separately in the smaller 2nd bag they allow in case I have to check this bag. Have a friend who had her reg taken apart by TSA when it went through checked baggage. It helps to use those rectangle zipped bags form travel suppliers for the wetsuit stuff and clothes. Easier to pack and fit everything in. Linda C
MICHAEL C I would like to know this myself. I don't have much room in my dive bag and my BC takes up a bunch of room.
FRED A It is light, but does take up space, about the same as any other light BCD. I recommend pulling the cumberbund really tight before you pack it; that makes it a bit smaller in your bag. Other than that, I can't think of any ideas to make it pack smaller.
George S Hi. I am trying to decide between purchasing an Islander versus an Islander II.
Main issue is the weight system. I dive in the Philippines, and the boatmen carry the tanks and BCDs from the boat to the dock and back. Courtesy is to take your weight pockets from your (integrated) BCD, and carry them with your mask and fins, to give these guys a break in the lifting department. I know the Islander has removable weight pockets, but it looks like you just drop the weights in the Islander II and zip the top. That would mean the boatmen are carrying an extra 16 lbs for my system. Do I have this right.
Also, other than the weight system, is there anything else distinguishing these two BCDs?
Thanks
MICHAEL C George,
I bought this BCD about a year and a half ago. It is great for traveling. My father in-law has a Scuba Pro Nighthawk which he loves but, his past four trips to the Caribbean he has asked me to borrow my BCD since I was not attending and this is so much smaller and lighter. You are correct about the weight system they do just drop in and zip. The pockets do have the quick release snap that I usually use to take the weights out before the dive operation takes my equipment to give them a break. It is a bit of a pain sometimes but, other than that I love this BCD. But since I use this BCD mainly in the Caribbean I do not use a lot of weight anyhow. I also have not had any experience with the Islander I But, did a good bit of research before I bought this and the Islander II beats out the Islander I in all of the reviews I read.
Mike
ANTHONY W The Islander II does have weight pockets, however does not come with mesh bags to put the weights in (like my Zeagle Ranger LTD does). When you remove the weights from the BC, they are loose. You may be able to find something suitable for this.
Also, the weight pockets are on the small-ish side; to get 16 lbs into it - pretty sure you would have to use four 4 lb'ers; two per side.
BLAINE P Regarding the Islander 2 BCD weight system, I bought zippered weight pouches separately and they were not more that $20 for both so do not let this me your deciding factor.
I really am happy with my Islander 2 BCD.
JEMMOTH H I have the islander 2 so i don't know anything about the 1. There are no removable pockets, you just put your weights in the zippered pouches.
WAYNE S I have been diving my Islander for a bit over a year and am very satisfied with it. I think the integrated weight system works well as far as jettisoning but could be awkward to carry the weights separately as most people will probably need to use multiple soft weights to arrive at their requirement. I use a small canvas shopping bag for this. It is a great BC to travel with, light and compact, plenty of attach points and durability has been very good. I would recommend it to a friend.
CAROL M We own both the Islander and Islander II. Yes it is true that you can just remove the Islander weight pockets. With Islander II you just slip your weights into the zippered pockets. I have the Islander and I really like that I can just remove my weigh pockets and hand them off to lighten my BC when exiting the water of climbing up a bank. As for the Islander II you can unzip or unhook the bottom of the weight pouch and your weights will fall right out. I also find that the weight pockets are easier to get to on the Islander because they are closer to the front of your BC than on the Islander II. That is the only real difference we have found. I hope this helps.
STEWART P I think that they changed how you dump the weights from the pocket for the islander 2. I like the new islander but the weight is not all that easy to take in and out . If it had the weight pouches it would be better. I just warned the guys on the dive boat that the weight is in there . the vest is pretty light and packs flat so it is not bad to travel with.
CAPT T George,
We have both. My daughter lost a weight pocket diving and had to replace it at $65 with ones that don't fit as well since they don't make the replacements any more. We love the isl 2 and feel that it is superior to the first one.
MARY K You are right about the weight pockets so we ended up buying a SeaQuest Lattitude BC which has removeable weight pockets. Leisurepro made the exchange super easy and in time for our upcoming trip!
JOHN T The weights go into zippered side pockets. You can easily remove the weights and carry them separate from the BCD. I would highly recommend weight pouches to keep them together.
CHRISTOPHER W This is correct. The pockets zip from the top to allow you to drop in the weights. There is a large clip on the bottom to allow you to dump them if needed. I have been using the BCD for a few years on many dives and have not had any issues.
I never used the other so I am not sure of any other differences.
Shopper Does the Islander2 have any additional lift capacity for cold water diving than the Islander had?
LeisurePro S No, the lift capacity and weight capacity on the Islander and Islander 2 are the same. The newer version added some zippered pockets, a sternum straps, and is just as light at 6 pounds.
Shopper Does this BCD have a shoulder exhaust/dump valve?
LeisurePro S Yes, there is a dump valve on the shoulder of the Oceanic II that is activated by pulling down on the corrugated hose.
Shopper What are the differences between the Oceanic Islander and Islander 2 BCDs?
LeisurePro S Oceanic redesigned the weight pockets on the Islander 2 so that they now have a clip quick release instead of velcro. The only other changes made were cosmetic-- both are still super lightweight at 6 pounds.
