Shopper I'm a newbie at external flashes. I have a Canon GS11 withh water proof case. I sometimes have exposure problems using the built in flash, with half of the frame being very "hot" and the other half very dark. This is due to the construction of the water proof case. Is it possible to use the Nano with the Canan GS11 without having the camera's built in flash fire, and just have the Nano fire?
Tom T Use of the Canon flash is required to trigger your Nano flash to fire. Are you using the fiber optic cord? If so, you can use black electrical tape to cover the spot on the outside of the Canon case where your FO cable attaches (thus "covering" your Canon flash). Even better, get a second Nano to balance your lighting.
RANDAL B I do not believe that you can do this, given the fact the flash is triggered by a fiber-optic cable from the camera's flash which then activates the external flash.
TAMARA M I'm sorry, I can't answer this question. I use an Olympus housing.
Good luck!
ALEXANDER D Nano fires from the flash light of your camera through a light transmitter that you would arrach on your case on top of where camera flash is. Nano will have more light than your camera, so no concern of your flash creating uneven lighting with nano.
EKUDOM C I would use the the diffuser in front of the flash. My recommendation is use diffuser every time you use flash. Also learn how to use manual White Blance. Your picture will come out much better with using any flash (during the day).
LARRY D Howdy,
The problem that causes the hot area and the dark area is the shadow from the lens extension. The Nano is raised above that area so it gives you a good diffusion of the light. The Nano is activated by the camera's flash so you need to have it fire. Using the right (a lot of trial and error) diffuser supplied with the flash you will be able to get good pics.
JOHN H JOHN H:Yes the G-11 and G-12 housing has a long port causing the internal flash of the camera to create a shadow on half of your macro or close up photos. The way to have the external flash work while the internal flash does not work is to use a fiber optic cable ( which you can order from fantasea for the Nano flash) and use the black plexaglass lens which comes with the fiber optic cable. You have to cut this plexaglass lens (with a hacksaw) to fit the small flash area on the exterior of the G11/G12 housing. Then stick it on the outside of the housing with the velcro sticker tape supplied and stick another velcro sticker tape on the outside of this lens to stick the fiber optic cable onto. You have to leave the internal flash on so it activates the external flash thru the fiber optic cable but the black lens will block the internal flash from casting a shadow on your image. good luck.
TROY B No
The nano fires when the camera flash fires
Pointed down too much it corrects your problem very well
I prefer a larger flash for better color but the nano does very well, and at low cost I won't feel so bad when it floods
MARK N Yes you can use the external flash by its self. I have gotten very good exposures with mine and and a home made adjustable arm mounted a base with a handle. I have found it to be a good add-on. I have made about 10 dives up to 110 mtrs with no problems.
