When the SL is not in the "power reducer" is it still just as powerful as the SL Star? And which would you recomend for shooting large grouper, hogfish, cobia, etc?
PASCAL G I seldom use the reducer it is great for hogs and grouper! The best advantage over some other guns is the sturdy spear ie the mares makes a similar gun with a skinnier spear that tends to bend easily.
RALPH F I Don't know about the sl but the sl with power reducer does a great job for me, I've hunted grouper, flounder, hogs and it is great. I don't shoot cobia as you really need a reel for them. I chose that model for ease of loading too as the longer one would be harder to load and a shorter one don't have enough velocity.
Goog luck and good hunting friend!
DAVID C Hello, I would be happy to answer any questions you might have about the Cressi SL. This is the second SL I have owned. The first, i used for a couple of years and lost it in a battle with a large red snapper under a bridge span my shot of about 16' was not a kill shot but, it was all I had . My guess is, the spear line got cut in the fray, the lanyard around my wrist broke the ( not so well made) plastic eye that it went through on the gun. Under the bridge span in tight quarters, it got dusty quick I got the snapper but lost the gun I suspect it floated away. Instead of sinking like a teak band gun. Still I bought a new one ( there great for traveling ) Enough fish tales and the gun that got away. The cressi SL is a great gun. But, can be difficult to load for some. The second gun I have is significantly more difficult to load than my first it may be because it's new and may need some adjustment, Im not sure. It does seam to have more pop in unreduced mode , I would recommend using the reduced mode for in close reef type fishing the range seems to be best at 12-14 feet for good kill hogs grouper snapper easy kills, amberjack and other pelagics with the big and hard gill plates, sometimes good penetration is tough. I shoot a little father Back on them. You end up with a fight on your hands but, the penetration is better and you lose fewer fish. We all know that feeling watching a badly wounded fish swim away because the shot didn't hold. My review. **** 4stars. Comments...... It needs a stonger keeper and more in depth operation/tuning instructions. I upgraded the factory spear to a better steel. Its a buy in my log book.
CAMILO P I do not know how powerful is the SL star, but I find this gun very powerful for its size, and it has always been enough for me. I am not an open water diver, but generally spear close to the shore and on shallow reefs or rock formations. The power reducer is a great feature for hunting very close to the reefs or under the rocks. It is still quite powerful and it goes much easier on your spear when you hit the rocks. For shooting large grouper I will not use the power reducer option unless you are shooting from very close range.
