Shopper I bought a snorkel vest and wore it on a trip and really enjoyed just being able to float for hours and not work hard to float. I was wondering though if people had suggestions on how the crotch strap should be adjusted. I changed it a lot during my 5 days of snorkeling. If it was loose at all the vest would rise up and still end up causing a wedgie. If I tightened it to cause this before even getting in the water it then it didn't rise up and the underneath strap didn't move. I was happy with the jacket and fit, but didn't know if others dealt with this and if I was wearing it correctly or it should be tighter or looser? Thanks. Also, I have read on sites people say snug and I guess I don't know how tight that means. Thanks
JASON H Think about a belt you would wear around your waist. it's generally snug but not squeezing you.
Ideally, you want the vest to "fit" you, but obstruct your movement. Best way I've found is to fully inflate the vest on land then adjust the straps to fit comfortably. What this prevents is squeezing yourself when you are in the water and try to inflate. I tend to wear mine deflated in the water and use it for safety if I get tired.

G. WILLIAM C Inflate as little as possible to maintain positive buoyancy. At that inflation, the strap should be 'snug' (i.e.; not too tight)
John H Is the inflation tube on this vest stiff or flexable?
DENISE M The inflation tube is stiff. There is some flexibility at the base.
CHARLES P Its flexible. Its flat until you blow some air into it. As it fills with air it becomes more rigid.

You do not full inflate. These help when you are in open water and are not comfortable clearing mask and need some rest. Note that the more air you put in, the less you have dive to the bottom.

Shopper I'm trying to decide what to get. Why did you pick this one?
CHRISTOPHER C We chose this one mainly by price, but really just needed something to give our very young boys, who were just becoming confident as swimmers at the time, a little added safety and support (buoyancy) while snorkeling.
Shopper what is the best way to determine which size to get?
CHERI S i just looked at the size chart, right beside the "select size and color" button......I think I got the small for my 10 yr. old grand daughter.
DAVID R Generally, just a small amount of additional buoyancy is all that is required to maintain a snorkeler at the surface, so the smallest of bladders would probably work fine - remember, you are not using this as a life jacket, just something to trim your buoyancy. Also, more body fat generally means more positive buoyancy and less needed to artificially supplement.

JANNELL S Yes, my mother (80 yrs old) used it and it worked very well for her.

CHARLES P Certainly - in the larger sizes. This type of vest is for emergency flotation when snorkeing or swimming. Its basicly an orally inflatable life vest. It is not for use with SCUBA as a buoyancy compensator because it does not have an over-inflation release valve.

Shopper how do i determine size to order?
JASON H As a guy, I guessed it would be like buying a Tshirt. The XL was perfect for my 5'11" 215lb frame. As for it's use I did utilize it last year during a scallop trip due to rough surface conditions. When properly attached (use the crotch strap) it doesn't get in your way. For my wife who is petite 5ft (i'll leave it there), I guessed medium and it fit nicely.
JOE A Small for children under 100 lbs, Med 100 lbs and XL 150 lbs.
TIM K Go to the size chart and find the one that is most likely to fit comfortably over your head.

GLENN B I would recommend buying 1 small, 1 medium and 1 large.
You do not put a lot of air in them... Too much air and you cannot dive. They make you more comfortable snorkeling for long periods away for the boat and may allow your son to be comfortable swimming around by himself.

Michael M Hi-- I am a complete idiot. I inflated it to try it on, now cannot figure out how to deflate the darned thing! (Of course there were no instructions, but I cannot help but notice that in the comments people mentioned that their 12 year old had no problem deflating. I am considerably older than that...) So -- how do you deflate it?

It has a piece that screws to allow the spring loaded valve to be pushed down for inflation/deflation. If yours has something like this, make sure the valve can be pushed down and hold it down while you squish (that's a technical term by the way) all the air out. My only other thought, not being able to blow the picture up enough to get detail of the valve, is that your valve is spring loaded in a closed positon that allows for inflation. Try pulling up on the valve gently and see if it gives a little and lets the air out. Good luck."
Michael M Thanks. It turns out that there is a little plastic tab on the cap to the air tube that fits into the airtube and depresses the valve, etc. Instructions might have been useful on this one.

EDWARD S Hi, I have the same vest. It is not intuitive and took awhile to figure out. There is a tab on the cap of the inflator tube. Pinch it between your fingers and insert it in the white plastic 'crosshairs' on the top of the inflator tube. Pushing that in slightly will release the air. Hope that works for you.

MARC M You simply push down on the end of the inflation mouthpiece, then squeeze the vest to force the air out. You push the end in to inflate and also to deflate the vest. I hope this helps.

I couldn't make your suggestion work, exactly.
Where am I supposed to push down-- inside or outside the inflation mouthpiece?
If I push on the outside, nothing moves.
If I look INSIDE the mouthpiece, I see an x-shaped plastic bit, but it's set in too deeply to push with fingers, etc.
But there is a plastic tab on the lid to the mouthpiece. I was able to get the thing to deflate only by sticking that tab into the mouthpiece and using it to push down on the x-shaped plastic bit.
But this doesn't seem to be what you are recommending.
Also, the tab on the lid doesn't seem designed to do that.
What am I missing?

MARC M Michael I am sorry for the confusion I caused. My wife's vest, from Leisure Pro, was one I bought about 3 years ago and it was made by Innovative Scuba Concepts. After looking at the pictures I see that the inflation tube on my vest is more like the one on the "Leisure Pro Black Snorkel Vest." The end of the tube is spring loaded and slides up and down the shaft to open and close the valve. I'm afraid I can't be of much help to you. I hope you have as much fun as my wife continues to have snorkeling with her vest.

CRAIG H I CURRENTLY HAVE 3 DIFFERENT SNORKEL VESTS WITH DIFFERENT INFLATION VALVE SETUPS. NOTE THAT THE INFLATION TUBE TIP IS A VALVE THAT SITS ON AN INTERNAL SPRING (USUALLY), THAT WHEN PUSHED DOWNWARD (TOWARDS THE INFLATION TUBE) WILL ALLOW THE AIR TO ESCAPE. HOLDING THE VALVE OPEN AND SQUEEZING THE VEST WILL CLEAR THE AIR FROM THE VEST. SOME VALVES HAVE SPRINGS AND 'THREADS' (THAT CAN BE SCREWED IN OR OUT TO HOLD THE VALVE OPEN OR CLOSED FOR DEFLATING OR INFLATING.)
HOPE ITS NOT A BAD VALVE. IF IT IS SOME KIND OF MALFUNCTION, LEI PRO WILL MOST CERTAINLY MAKE IT RIGHT.

Too deflate the vest you simply push down on the tip of the nozzle that inflates it. To inflate it, you push it down and blow into it. To deflate it you push it down to allow the air to escape.
There is a safety coupling just below the tip that screws up or down as a safety mechanism. You need to be sure it is screwed all the way down for the tip to operate properly.

LeisurePro S The waist strap and crotch strap should be able to be fastened comfortably around your waist without the vest riding up too high or too low on your torso. Think of it as if you were putting on a smock or an apron.
Shopper My husband is 6'4" and around 275 lbs. Would the x-large work for him or should we look at something else?
LeisurePro S No, I think an XL will work out well.
