Shopper I am wondering, since I do not own my own SCUBA equipment, whether it is practical to buy this mask since it is air integrated, so I would not be using that feature. Is it still worth buying the mask or is a non-integrated wrist computer more practical for me?
ALBERT M I recently made a trip to St Thomas. At the start of the second day of diving, I had a leak in my regulator that made using it impossible. Since we were on the boat already, the captain gave me the use of a dive shop regulator.
My initial reason for buying the DataMask was to more clearly see the displays (I already use a Suunto Cobra and was using it too). Anyway, the DataMask provided all of the functions except the remaining air. Even though I did not have the use of this, I found the mask to be well worth it for me.
If you use this as a back up to another computer, I'd say go for it but, if however you can see your gauges clearly---hmmmm.
KEVIN C P I purchased and used the Oceanic DM 5 times recently and fine it to be a great investment for several reasons. After using a standard mask for diving previously the comfort and ease of use of the DM, once you understand its functions is a great asset to the diving experience. It has great comfort, easy to use and constant information on the dive, I'll never go back to a standard mask. Practicality is in the pocket of the purchaser.
DON W You need a regulator to hook up transmitter to.
JOSEPH K I would say that if you are not going to use the air integrted feature, to buy a wrist unit. Why don't you also consider carrying an allen wrench to install the sending unit on your rental equipment ( it would only take two minutes).
RONALD P If you do not own your own regulator setup, it is not worth it to have the air integrated mask in my opinion. A Oceanic Geo would probably serve you well.
JEHIEL B This is a very high tech and expensive piece of equipment. It is air integrated and in order to use it, you will have to connect the transmitter to the 1st Stage every time you go out diving; which may not be the best thing to do since this equipment is not design to constantly be connected and disconnected.
Since you have no control as to what equipment a Shop may give you; I wouldn't recommend buying this kind of equipment under your current status. This is the ideal equipment for some one that has all (or at least the First and Second stage) parts of their own equipment.
RAYMOND B I would not hesitate to buy one and use it without the air intregration. There is enough data off of the mask that it is still worth it. In fact you get the same data off the mask as you would off a wrist computer that is not intregrated so really its the same and you get a mask too. However, I have used this with a lot of rental gear and usally ask the rental shop to take off the pressure guage off and put my transmitter on instead. All of them have been willing to do it without exception so now you get all of the data possible. Most of the shop are happy to do it because they like the fact that divers use computers because it make their job easier. Also they really like the datamask and like to see people dive with it. I have done the in the Bahamas, Turks and Cacos and the Caymans. You will like the mask. It's great and I have two. Ray
LISA C If you dont have your own breathing apparatus, it would be better to get the wrist computer. Hope this helps!
WILLIAM M I would buy one, any dive shop that you would rent gear from would be more than glad to install the transmitter for you and take it off when your done.
DAVID H You can easily remove a port on the rental regulator and screw the transmitter in to get an accurate air pressure to work you dive profile (or nitrox % if you want to go that route). There is no reason why NOT to do that. Use all of your equipment to its fullest. Take advantage of every option you can.
DANIEL K I personally like the mask because of the fact that all my information is right in front of me. However, this is not my main unit. I'm always checking with a hardwired/hard connected computer so that I make sure that I have enough air towards the end of the dive. The other fact that you have to consider is that it may not fit your face correctly. You may use it first time and find out that it's:
a) heavy
b) not enough light comes thru
c) may not fit your face correctly
For these reasons, I wouldn't recommend this as your main and only unit. I would go with a computer that is connected thru a hose. Just gives you more piece of mind when you're diving, since these wireless units requires batteries.
DOUGLAS H Most wrist computers require a sender that attaches to the 1st stage. The Data Mask is ideal for the traveling diver as you have your mask and computer in one package with full tank supervision. The mask is un parralleled for night diving. Oceanic makes a quick disconnect that can attach to the rental 1st stage for easy fire up of the mask. Take a small adjustable wrench and you are set.
Shopper How clear is the display for someone needing reading glasses (low power) ?
TOM C Very clear, the only time it's a bit hard to read (dim) is when you're on the surface. Then by putting a hand up to the glass you get it dark enough inside to see it. But since you really only read it underwater it works quite well as the display is razor sharp and easy to read.
WAYNE P I normally need a +2 for reading. I have no problem reading the heads up display without any correction. It's much better than trying to read my wrist computer.
MACONDRAY S It's clear enough for those of us with mild to moderate corrections in our glasses, and I like it, but still dive with both my DataMask and my Pro Plus 2 console. The Pro Plus 2 shows more information, and I like to dive with two computers. If I were forced to choose between one or the other, I would choose the bulky Pro Plus 2. This said, I really DO also like the DataMask!
ALBERT M The reason that I purchased the DataMask was that I had trouble reading my gauges, especially in murkier water. I used the DataMask for the first time last week and it was a pleasure to see the display without any problems. In short, it was clear and I had no problems and can now say goodbye to the magnifiers in my other masks.
DAVID H You should have no problems at all reading the values. I was the same way before I had Lasix, and did not have any problems.
RAYMOND B I need reading glasses too and I have never had a problem reading the DataMask display. I also have a Oceanic VT3 computer and I have both programmed to the same transmitter. I use the VT3 for all of the data probably more because I have all my dives on it but I love the DataMask because I never have to look at my wrist for information.
I think the logic in the DataMask is the same as the VT3.
I have two DataMasks; one for me and one for my dive buddy which is normally me son.
WILLIAM M I wear contact lenses in mine, I have a 1.25 lense in the right eye so i can see it clearer, but I don't have a problem reading it without the lense
ERIC F The display is really large (because it's really close to your eye) and you won't have any problems. I need mild reading glasses for small print an I have no problem with the HUD.
DON W Real clear and easy to read...I've had a mask for 2-3 years and it's one of the best things I did. I've had no problems at all
JEHIEL B I have fairly good vision, so I can not be 100% sure; but I have been using the mask for some time now. In my opinion, the display is big enough for a person who uses reading glasses to be able to read it well. The numbers appear large enough. Also, keep in mind the display "brightness" can be adjusted to accommodate the diver. It can be adjusted from 100% (very bright) down to your liking. The brighter you choose the setting, the more battery power you will consumed. The battery is fairly easy to change though. So, bottom line, if you increase the power bright enough, you should be able to read all the numbers on the display section. I use a 60 setting to conserve battery power and is plenty for me (I could even go lower if I wanted). Please remember, your eyes need a little bit of time to adjust once you get in the water. Give a few minutes to actually make a judgement.
richard k Do the wireless transmitters allow for multiple computers at 1 time.. I would possibly want to use 2 wireless computers at once (backup and primary) and would like both to be hoseless if possible?
KELLY L My wife just bought one of the oceanic dive computers that can receive multiple transmitters. It works okay but you have to be pretty close. You could probably program one of those types of computers to pick up your transmitter so that you'd have a backup computer. I still use an analog gage for my pressure as a backup. It came in handy when my regulator malfunctioned.
DAVID H I have a the wireless HUD computer and it works great! My other computer isn't wireless, but I don't see why the wireless wouldn't work for two read outs, especially if they are from the same company (Oceanic).
MARK A As long as you have two (2) HP ports on your 1st stage regulator I don't know why not. Also make sure you pair your computers one at a time so they don't pick up each others transmissions. I've never had a problem with wireless (hoseless) comunication from others while diving in close proximity with each other. Hope that helps. Ambler231
DOUGLAS H Richard. The mask is very user friendly after some learning curve. The sender is mask specific and you can use multiple computers if your have the low pressure ports on your 1st stage. I use the mask for night dives and as a back up to my hose supported main computer. I have been diving for 28 years and love new technology, but still rely on my old Oceanic dive computer from 10 years ago. If I have any negatives, it is the loss of some side vision from the right side. On Night dives that is far less an issue.
WILLIAM M I've never tried it but see no reason it would'nt work, two different computers and two transmitters, i don't think that they would interfere with each other.

RONALD R You never said whether both hoseless computers are the same kind of different brands. I think you could use two Oceanic HUD masks at once since they are usually different frequencies. I wouldn't want two HUD masks. Since I got mine in July of '08, I have sent it back three times. Surely not worth the money. If Leisure Pro would refund my money, or most of it, I would send it back in a heartbeat.
JOSEPH S Yes they do. I use two Oceanic computers with wireless transmitters - a Datamask and an Oceanic Atom 1.0 and have never had a problem.
SCOTT F Yup, it is possible (and highly practical) to do that. I run my Datamask and Atom 3.0 off the same transmitter. However, I've also had to warranty replace one Oceanic transmitter that consistently stopped working upon submerging to 33', so you might consider creating some redundancy for your transmitter(s).

Additionally, the screen displays data including current depth, elapsed dive time, dive time remaining and more.
