RICHARD M I'm certainly not an authority on diving safety, but if my computer stopped reading pressure I would terminate the dive and evaluate the problem on the surface. I would make sure the problem was resolved before using the computer again. An air integrated computer that intermittently loses pressure readings is dangerous and useless. Return it to the factory for service before it costs you your life.
ROBERT N The problem may be in the pressure sensor. I've had that problem with another dive computer (Suunto) and the only thing the factory service technician could do is offer to replace the entire computer.
Shopper Is there a compass on the back side of the computer?
JOHNIE J No there is no compass on the back side of the computer. There is a model that has a compass that is on the end of the puck. You can see it on Mare's website (mares dot com), click on computers, you'll find it listed as "Puck Air w/Compass: code 414162".

MAURICE V No. Mine came equipped with a compass mounted forward-facing, positioned above the computer screen. I wasn't expecting for it to have a compass at all, so I was surprised. Although, I do like having it there - it's unobtrusive.

PHILIP F I personally do not frequent dives requiring decom, but the Mares Puck Air has multiple features to calculate and display decom stops along with a flashing indicator if a decompression?stop has not been observed. I bought this model because it has little to no drag and provides the basics of depth and tank pressure, etc. in one small unit. Display of alpha/numeric data is quite small and only optimum in bright light. Not a problem here in south Florida.

NICHOLAS U Yes, a three minute safety stop is automatically added but not mandatory above 20 feet on every dive. This computer is very particular about any accidental decompression obligation. It does not credit for any time spent on the slow ascent, and and only decrements the decompression stop time when precisely within the depth window shown on the computer.
Glenn G Yes it does. However if you exceed min air reserve (750 default) it will no longer prominently display the remaining time for the stop.
Shopper Can this be used without air attached to track ?
I'm new to diving, and on a budget so I hate to spend $200 or so on a wrist computer when I know that 5-6 years down the road I will likely upgrade to air integrated. At this time I can't afford the whole Octo, so I was wondering if this might be a way to compromise... use it without air now, then when I can afford the rest of the Octo I can attach it and use it as air integrated.
PETER O I think you could, but you would need to make sure that you seal the air inlet to prevent water entering the tank pressure port.

SUSAN B I got this for my son last year when he was obtaining his OW certification. It is a good computer and easy to use. When I got his equipment I got it as a bundle package. I just got the software to download to our pc. I use an electronic log book (Dive Log 5.0) for all of us and have everything backed up to my pc at home. I havent had a chance to download it yet but will soon.
STEPHEN J W The puck air monitors air pressure directly from a high pressure hose attached to the primary stage of the regulator (the part that attaches to the tank). It can be used as a stand-alone computer without monitoring air pressure, but not sure why you wouldn't just attach it and use full functionality. It is a great computer at a good price.
MARK F I don't think it would be possible without risking the unit. I suppose you could find a way to block the HP connection, but I wouldn't favor it.
To be honest, air integration is a luxury. If you are on a tight budget, get a basic wrist mounted computer; it will do everything you need. Also, in 5-6 years it is probable that you will be looking for a new computer anyway.

In the end I went with a basic wrist mount (VEO 180) which I got on a great sale here on Leisure Pro. As you suggested, the wrist mount will do everything that I really wanted a computer for... just doesn't have the extra bells and whistles of air integration. If I stick with diving, which I fully expect I will, 5-6 years down the road I'll be in a better situation to upgrade and buy a full set of equipment including an air integrated computer.
Connor G They are two separate systems, so it is really one or the other in regards to the air integrated puck and the standard dive computer puck. As far as being on a budget, this system is worth the money; you just need to see this as an investment for your diving future.
I started off using the wrist mounted Aires Manta (Nitrox/Air computer) and loved it's features. I happened to stumble upon the air integrated Puck on Leisure Pro about a year ago and decided to pick it up as a supplement (run the Manta as a backup computer and the Puck as primary). I could not be happier with this product. The only con I can see is that fact this it uses a very conservative dive algorithm, which is great for a new diver, but can be an annoyance to someone with experience and someone who has better air consumption techniques. Overall this computer is a must have to any serious diver.

RICHARD M The Puck is my forth air integrated dive computer and, by far, the least expensive. My wife and I have been diving for a number of years. My computer died just before a dive trip this past summer, so I bought the least expensive air integrated system that I could find for the trip. It took less than five minutes to remove my old computer and connect the Puck to my octopus. You can do it with your eyes closed!
I really like the Puck. It is small and provides all the info that you could possibly want or need for recreational diving. I used it for 20 dives in Cozumel during our summer trip and again for twelve dives in Belize in October. I was going to replace it with a better computer this Christmas but I have decided not to spend the money. It's not fancy or flashy, but it is very easy to set up and use.
I don't understand why you would buy it and not connect it to your octopus. If you are renting equipment you can always take a small wrench and connect it yourself. Most of the dive operations that I have worked with in the Caribbean would be happy to do it for you. Since you have to have some way of monitoring your air supply why not remove the rental console and replace it with your Puck? That's why you purchased it.
Jose J Richard, Thanks for the feedback. You raise a good point I hadn't considered. I just assumed when I rented dive gear that the shop wouldn't attach my own air integrated computer to their equipment. I called a dive shop I dove with in that past and a couple I am planning to dive with soon and one shop said they would not attach it, the other two said they would attach it for a small fee. So I guess this would be an option.

Monica s No, this is a fixed air integrated computer console with the hose attached that screws into you high pressure port of the first stage. I am assuming you mean Regulator set up and not octo as the octo is the alternate safe second stage on a regulator set up. Joe D I prefer a short HP air hose. I hook it to the D-ring on my BC on my left side, rather than having a cross over from left to right. I was wondering if this comes with a short hose (between 20 and 24 inches) or a longer one.
In addition, I recently bought a regulator that has a non-standard LP pressure hose (it is a swivel and you must by a special hose when it needs replacement). Is there any chance this comes with a non-standard HP fitting at the hose/gauge interface? Hope not. Otherwise, I can't shorten the hose with an off-the-shelf HP hose.

LARRY B I actually just sold this computer so I am not sure the exact length of the hose. I remember that the attachment was the standard HP fitting only. I used this as a backup only and routed the hose along the bottom and then the side of my BCD so it was fairly long.
Shopper are you able to see remaining in bar as opposed to psi? does the audible alarm go off when air is getting low? cheers
CARLY A Yes, you have the option of setting the air pressure in bar or psi, and you can also set audible alarms when air gets low. The manual walks you through how to do all of this, and you can set the audible alarms for whatever bar/psi you want. I just put this computer through six dives last week and could not have been happier. It's very simple to use, and the display is extremely user-friendly.
MICHAEL L I'm pretty sure there's a setting to choose between psi & bar (I havent actively set it, but I think I saw it in the system settings). As for the alarm- definitely audible when low. Overall, great little dive comp!
L W Does this unit's back-lighting light up when a critical function appears (like NDL reached, deep stop required, etc)? Useful for night dives.
KEITH A from my experience it does not. It will only light up when you press the button.
ROBERT D No. The back light is only activated by depressing the button for two seconds; however, there are audible alarms to indicate you entered deco mode, a deep stop is required, fast ascent, low air reserve, etc.
L W My last computer is pretty old and has just the basics, nitrox, planner, oxygen and nitrogen loading, bottom time, etc. What new features does a computer like this offer compared to those old ones? (I presume one is safety stop countdown). Does it have features and customizability of full featured ones like which algorithm one wants to use, or whether to use liberal/moderate algorithms, or utilize the latest safety stop recommendation of 1 min at 1/2 one's max depth, etc.
PATRICK G You should review the Mares website or the specification section of this site to get a full list of the features. This computer should be considered a basic air/nitrox dive computer. You can change the settings to make the calculations more or less conservative. You can also program the computer for altitude diving by selecting one of three presets. There is a safety stop feature which engages whenever you descend below 10 meters and there is also a deepstop function. The computer will go into decompression mode if you exceed your NDL. However, there is no ability to gas switch during the dive.
L W Thanks. When comparing feature for feature, most of these AI computers have the same stuff, but it just comes doesn to the customizability. Anyway, I just do basic air/nitrox dives. Looks like conservative mode will make this conservative computer even more conservative so it is useless unless I go cold water diving with a hangover, etc. Features I see missing are nitrogen/oxygen loading bar graph.
JONATHAN T This one is a pretty basic computer. Yes, it does countdown your safety stop, but it uses the 3 minute countdown. There's not a lot of customization for it. Sounds like it would be pretty similar to your old computer.
L W Thanks. I searched around a little more on it. It doesn't have nitrogen or oxygen loading bar graph, which is what I usually look at instead of NDL time remaining. It does have SAC related things since it is AI.
Since I haven't been enlightened by all the new features of current computers, I don't know if I will miss them if I just get this.
JONATHAN T My only complaint about it is the single button. It can make navigating menus a little bit of a chore pre and post dive, but it's not a issue for me during the dive as it displays all the info I need.

Louis H No. It has a built-in light. If you depress the red button it will light-up for a few seconds (a-la digital watch). I"m happy with it; simple to use, lots of functions, air/nitrox, and compact.

ALLA K Hi, I'm not sure about your question, it doesn't has "glow in the dark feature", but it has backlight, which light up whole screen and lit for some time, so I wasn't need to point light on computer.

KEITH S I have a very similar unit to this. The unit I have has a compass on the end. The compass on my unit does glow in the dark after you shine a light on it
ROBERT E No, it is backlit, like a watch. It is a completely digital screen, it has nothing that glows when light is shown on it.
MATT K The digital screen does not glow like some of the other comps, but it does have a backlight. Very very dim, though, it'll get the job done, but illuminating it with a light is going to be your best bet. I do wish it had a brightness and time control, because that's another thing, it only stays lit for about thirty seconds. The compass, on the other hand, will glow when illuminated.
I will say though, my friends and I use this computer for night dives all the time and we've all been very happy with the purchase.

I have dive computers that I might use once a year on trips. Every time I pull it out to get it ready for the next trip, the battery seems to need replacement, even though there were no more than 30 dives from the previous trip.
JAMES J I dont know for 170 dives but have owned the puck for about 5 months and have 28 dives on it and have not changed the battery, the nice thing about the puck is it takes a standard coin cell that you can get at any drug store so I always have a couple in my dive kit and they dont take up any room.
KENNY D I've used it on two dive trips, one for 6 days, one for 8 days since purchase, no problems with battery life so far.
ROBERT D I have made 50 dives with the Puck Air since I purchased it in Jan. 2012. The battery stiill reads full power.
VIJAY S Even we have used it only one trip last year, the battery shows good after a year. May be try a brand name battery.
L W I do buy brand name batteries, but now buy them in packages of 10 or 20. Too many last minute rush to go out and buy batteries when pulling out the computer and checking it before heading off to a trip. Plus, those screwdown caps that requires a big coin to open, they are easy to strip, especially a year after being in a salty environment.

TIM N I just recently purchased this computer. When I hold the red button down to turn on the backlight I can barely see it. In fact in a dark room its barely visible. Is this normal or should it be much brighter?
PHILIP Y First, it has been almost a year since I last used my Puck. I use an Air Integrated system, usually, and the Puck is my back-up. I believe my experience with it on a night dive was that it was easily bright enough to read all indicators. I also think there is a setting in the Menu to adjust the brightness. If this is not the case as I recall, I would recommend returning it. Unfortunately, I have been away from home for almost two months now and I do not have ready access to the Puck to check it for you.
MICHAEL R This must be normal because I had the same experience just now.I could read it in the dark but it was difficult.I have only used it on day dives so far so there has been no problem reading it.I have been happy with it especially considering its reasonable price..
ERNIE C If you are simulating night conditions you should be able to read the computer without any trouble, if not, you have a problem.
JEFF J I would say the light is dimmer than I would have expected. In a lit room, you barely know it's on. In a dark room, it's about as bright as the glow in the dark compass.

David R Dive Training does not offer a class for this computer but as others say it seems to be pretty simple to use
ANDREAS M I did not see/use an online class as the comp is quite simple to operate and the manual is pretty easy to understand. It does log more than 10 dives though. I think holds your last 30 or 50 dives.

ADAM B They are downloadable - you will have to buy that piece separately though. My experience is that the computer holds at least 20 dives- that is how many I have on mine since I got it.
CAMERON M It stores 10 dives I my memory serves me correctly. Haven't used it in a few months. But to download them you need to purchase a separate USB adapter for $100.
Shopper how long does the battery last and does it tell you how much battery life is left?
BURTON O Don't know exactly how long it will last but it will be at least a couple of years. It has two levels of battery warnings, Lo1 and Lo2 so you have plenty of opportunity to change it out before it shuts off. The manual suggests checking the battery power before each dive trip but i dive (in Bonaire) where the dive opperator carries replacements all the time. Its a common Li battery. There is absolutely no down side to this computer - its a best buy. My wife and I bought one each. Best computer I've ever owned.
Connor G I've had this model for just about a year now on the originsl battery. It lasts fairly long b/c it automatically goes into a sleep mode after a few minutes of non-use. It also tells u when you're low. U can test the battery life thru one if the settings
MICHAEL C Seems to have a good battery life. I have owned it for a year, (just 6 dives) and is still good. You can check the status of the battery. It shows either, OK, Lo1 or Lo2. Lo1 mean change soon and Lo2 means change now.
PHILIP F I have seen reference on the Web to aprox. 170 dives and that there is no "hot swap" feature. In other words, existing data is lost. There is a low battery indicator. The complete user manual is available online as a PDF document. Search: "Mares Puck Air Computer"

DARREN R it auto starts after 4 ft deep i believe. I do not have a quick connect. I cant remember what nitrox percentages it supports but I believe there are at least two (the most common mixes) that are supported. for the money- a great buy
MARK H The manual states that it will auto-start at 4 feet. I always turn it on to check my air before I put my tank on and never checked to verify that it shut off before entering the water, but I never had to press the button when checked the guage while submerged. The manual states that the nitrox mix can be adjusted from 21% - 50% in 1% increments. However, I don't do mixed gas diving, so I do not use this feature. I do not have a quick connect. So far, I am quite happy with this product. The only negative is that the backlight is not very bright. I used it on a cavern dive and could make out the readings with some concentration, but tended ot use my light.
JOSEPH S No Auto start. It's always a good idea to check your gauge BEFORE you jump in. Nitrox: The percentage of oxygen in the mix can be adjusted within the interval 21% - 50%, in increments of 1%. I do not have a quick connect. I put a padded gauge bag over it when not in use.
Monica s You do have to push the button, there is no automatic activation if you forget. It is programable up to 40% and does not have a quick disconnect option.

PAUL P The battery is one of the large lithium ion button cells (don't remember the exact size, but i think it is standard). User can replace the battery, but mares recommends that a professional do it instead.... The unit will flood if the battery isnt installed correctly. (i highly recommend this computer btw. It is very simple to use, Compact, and high quality)
JOSEPH S The battery in the Mares Puck Air is user replaceable with Lithium CR 2450. Replacing the battery is a delicate operation, and requires close attention. Inspect the O-ring carefully, checking for any signs of damage, tearing or warping. If necessary, replace it with a new O-ring (Mares spare part Cod. 44200654).

PHILIP Y No. It requires direct connection to a high pressure hose from your first stage. I imagine you can remove the computer from it's housing, but without your air pressure it really just becomes a depth gauge and timer.
ADNAN S This computer is connected to the tank via high pressure hose, which would make it extremely difficult if not imposable to convert to a wrist computer. I think you are confusing this with a hose-less computers.
JOSEPH S The Mares Puck Air can NOT be converted to a wrist mount. Since it is air-integrated, it must be connect to your high pressure hose. Mares does not offer a remote transmitter for this item. My wife and I both love this computer. Easy to use!

'PREDIVE' mode allows you to ensure all parameters for the upcoming dive are correctly set, the battery has sufficient charge to complete the dive and the computer display is properly functioning. Once you descend below 3 ft the computer automatically enters 'DIVE' mode.

The easy excess push buttons allow the diver to operate the computer in all conditions, even when wearing thick gloves. Navigating through the computer programs is extremely simple and very intuitive. There are three special function modes of Air, Nitrox and Bottom Time. The Puck Air has a maximum depth display of 492' (150 meter), a memory capacity of 36 hours, runs on a user replaceable 3 Volt CR2450 lithium battery, power indicator, back lighting for low light conditions, has a plan mode display, can be used in both imperial or metric units, fresh or seawater settings, residual nitrogen reset, option to exclude audible alarms and uncontrolled ascents", has an ascent rate indicators and is altitude adjustable.
