The trick to this device is how to use it. I noticed that if I just pushed the red button the quacking noise (underwater noise) would be faint, but if I grabbed the device firmly and pressed the red button it would make a loud quacking noise undewater. The reason for this I believe is because this device works by vibrating metal discs internally by means of air. If the device is garabbed firmly this allows the discs to vibrate properly and make the proper noise it was intended to deliver. Not grabbing the device firmly disperses the vibration throughout your hose and not the discs.

Try it and you will be gald you did. I use this device mostly for letting my dive buddies know I have found a lobster so stop swimming and wait up, but it can be used for almost anything.

I got this device as a gift from my son this summer (I do not know where he bought it) and gave it a try on our winter diving trip to Hawaii. I found the device very useful in calling my wife's attention to various things I notice underwater. We are shore divers who dive together, so there were no dive masters for us to show stuff. During our 50+ dives the device never failed, and by the end of the trip my wife became envy cause she had to wave her hands or to moo into the mask to call me back. It also worked well in an emergency case when my 2nd stage reg failed and I had to warn her urgently that I am going up. So I purchased a 2nd (exactly the same model) device as a gift for her.

The only drawback I found so far is that on the 1st push of the button the sound is muted, probably, because you need to blow the water out of the whistle chamber before it can work full force. But I got used to this quickly so this is just a minor imperfection. Also, since I have not tested this device in cold water I left this box unchecked. Highly recommended!

Something has given out in the valve after about two years on my inflator, and it was rarely used. My dive buddies have mentioned the same experience with these units. However, for the price, the new ones seem to work well, and could be replaced periodically.

I am a full time SCUBA instructor that dives almost daily. I like an air powered underwater horn to obtain the attention of wandering students. The underwater noise level on this device is so low, that divers simply ignore it. What I need is a Hammerhead. I used a Hammerhead for years. Rebuilt it several times. Unfortunately the company no longer makes it and mine finally fell apart. To bad a company does not reproduce the quality and noisemaking ability of the Hammerhead. Do not spend [$] on this Aquatec alert device. A tank banger works as well
