The Spiegel Grove wreck is one of the most accessible and popular dives in Key Largo. It's 510 feet (155 m) long and lies in shallow enough water so that beginner divers can dive this wreck. The Spiegel Grove, nicknamed the Spiegel Beagle, had been decommissioned in 1989 after 33 years of service. With a beam of 84 feet and tonnage of 6,880 tons, she was gigantic and perfect for an artificial reef. She had been a Landing Ship Dock so she was very broad. In fact, at the time of her sinking, she was the largest ship ever scuttled for an artificial reef... more

The 270-foot Sapona was built by Henry Ford in 1911. She served as a troop transport for just one trip during World War I. After the war, the Sapona was used by rumrunners between the Bahamas and Florida during Prohibition. Some say she was anchored and turned in to a private drinking and gambling club or simply a storage warehouse for rum. A hurricane in the late 1920s drove the ship aground between South Bimini and Cat Cay, where she only partially submerged. Today, the Sapona is very popular with divers and snorkelers. A large portion of the ship remains above water... more

Of all the ships that are reported to be haunted, the R.M.S. (Royal Mail Ship) Rhone has a very unique distinction: the ship lies 35 to 80 feet underwater. The Royal Mail Packet Company commissioned the ship in 1864 as a mail and passenger cruiser between England and the Caribbean. The Rhone's iron hull was 310 feet long and 40 feet wide and was believed to be the fastest and most modern ship in the fleet. Only two short years into its service however, the ship ran into trouble just outside the British Virgin Islands... more

Perhaps it's the glass bottom Boats feeding them every day to lure them closer for the tourists...or perhaps its years of protection that has been instilled in their genetics. Whatever the case, you'll find the sea life very curios and unafraid to approach or be approached by divers. This is great sometimes...sometimes not if you're trying to take pictures. Sha'ab Abu Nuhas is a large, slightly triangular shaped reef located around two miles to the north of Shadwan Island (also known as Shaker Island). The translation of Abu Nuhas is "Father of Brass". While there is not any brass here, it certainly deserves its other name - "The Ship's Graveyard". The approximatel nine foot (2.7 m) bronze sculpture symbolizes peace of mankind from its unusual setting, beneath the ocean at Key Largo Dry Rocks off John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. The original casting was placed in the Mediterranean Sea at San Fruttuoso Bay near Genoa, Italy in 1954. It is known as the Il Christo Degli Abissi or in English - Christ of the Abyss. Professor Guido Galletti cast the original from the inspiration of Italian swimmer/diver Duilo Merchant who wanted a symbol to inspire all who explored and loved the sea in 1954. In 1961... more

This 188-foot military ship is the jewel of the Marathon wreck fleet. Sunk intentionally as a dive attraction in March 1986, she now sits perfectly upright in 115 feet (35 m) of water offering 45 feet (14 m) of relief. Originally named the USS Randolph, she was built for the U.S. Army as a cable laying boat. She later served FP&L as a research ship to attract and study lightning, hence her name "Thunderbolt". After sinking at the dock in Miami, she was later purchased by a group of Keys divers in 1986, prepped as an artificial reef, and scuttled for her destiny as an artificial reef... more

The development of the Corsair began in 1938, when the US Navy issued a request for a new single-seat carrier-based fighter. The Chance-Vought company won the contract with their unique, gull-winged airframe pulled by the largest engine then available, the Pratt and Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp; the world's fastest and most powerful engine at the time. The Corsair served with the US Navy,US Marines, the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm, and the Royal New Zealand Air Force (and later, the French Aeronavale), and quickly became the most capable carrier-based fighter/bomber of the war... more

The Sea Tiger, the YO-257 and the San Pedro were all placed on the bottom near Waikiki to provide focal points for submarine tours. All three were immediately adopted by their environments. Thickly covered in underwater growth, the YO-257 is home to a number of turtles, as well as the usual staggering variety of Hawaiian fish. The stern section of this former Navy yard oiler offers a fairly spacious swim-through that is draped in coral - the ocean is slowly and gracefully embracing the man-made. This wreck was prepped for divers, with holes cut into its hull for access and egress... more

The chimney and archway are the greatest points of interest here. The entrance to the chimney is around 40 ft and then it is 40 ft straight down. After the chimney great opportunity is to then head west on the wall around 75 ft where you can check out the large and plentiful barrel sponges. You will then come across a great photo op - a striking archway that makes the perfect frame for divers or fish hovering in the blue water. There are also a few caves and a mini-chimney to be discovered. Look out for Black Durgons, Butterfly Fish and turtles throughout the dive... more

Years ago, before banking and tourism were big in Grand Cayman, the main industry was fishing. The fishermen would work the seas all day and return to the protection of the reef in the north sound to clean their catch. After years of throwing the entrails overboard the stingrays began gathering in the area on the shallow sand bars. The stingrays would feast on the free meal. Soon the stingrays began to associate the sound of fishing boats with food. In the late 1970s, SCUBA divers starting feeding the stingrays squid, which is one of their favorite dishes. Before long... more

Said to be the world's most popular dive site, Molasses Reef is kept clear by the Gulf Stream off the Atlantic coast of Key Largo. Populated with a very high concentration of animals and corals (especially star and elkhorn coral), the reef's inhabitants are a good representation of life throughout the Keys. Look for vase sponges and the sea turtles that flock to them. Many coral formations are shallow enough to make great diving for novices, and spots drop to about 50 feet (15.2 meters) for the more seasoned explorers... more
