The Sambo Reef is a collection of several reefs close to Key West. The area is divided into an Eastern area, a Middle area, and a Western area. The areas are located about four miles south of the Boca Chica Channel. If you go out to the Sambo Reefs, a pole will mark the eastern end of the reefs. The Xihwu (pronounced key' quot) artificial reef is a decommissioned Boeing 737-200 airframe which was donated by Qwest Airparts Ltd. of Memphis, Tennessee, thanks to the efforts of Air Canada. We had heard from a Red Sea dive guide that the Dunraven sank when the Captain went on a drinking binge having found out that his first mate was sleeping with his wife. He would not tell the first mate how to navigate, so they hit the reef (we have since been told differently: the Dunraven caught fire and drifted onto the reef). The wreck now lies in two sections next to each other, both of which are penetrable, but there is not always an entire route through. The Sea Tiger, the YO-257 and the San Pedro were all placed on the bottom near Waikiki to provide focal points for submarine tours. All three were immediately adopted by their environments. Thickly covered in underwater growth, the YO-257 is home to a number of turtles, as well as the usual staggering variety of Hawaiian fish. The stern section of this former Navy yard oiler offers a fairly spacious swim-through that is draped in coral - the ocean is slowly and gracefully embracing the man-made. The Wreck of the San Pedro was added as an additional attraction (and an additional artificial reef) in 1996. Although partially collapsed by the typhoons that have scoured it over the last decade or so, the San Pedro remains a picturesque home for turtles and white tip reef sharks. It's a popular dive sojourn for photographers. Remember as you dive the wreck that a submarine "dive-by" is a possibility. The 168-foot Sea Tiger sits at 130 feet below the surface of the waters on the south side of Oahu. This former Hawaiian fishing vessel has become a hulking, blue-gray neighborhood for eagle rays and home to a variety of reef species, from moray eels to delicate nudibranchs. One highlight to look for is the gigantic honu, or Hawaiian green sea turtle, which have taken up residence on the wreck. Built in 1984 as a Russian missile frigate, destroyer 356 was assigned to the Caribbean as part of the Soviet Union's Atlantic Fleet. It operated out of Cuba for years, before being retired. In the spring of 1998, the aging warship was purchased by the government of the Cayman Islands and then towed from Cuba to Cayman Brac to be sunk as an artificial reef. Years ago, before banking and tourism were big in Grand Cayman, the main industry was fishing. The fishermen would work the seas all day and return to the protection of the reef in the north sound to clean their catch. The Ruby E began her life as the Coast Guard Cutter named Cyane. The Cyane, known as WPC-105, was built in 1934 at the Lake Union and Dry Dock Machine Works in Seattle, Washington.
