Dry cavers were using directional markers long before there were any cave divers. The early cave divers in Florida saw the benefit of these markers, and Lewis Holzendorf came up with the idea of folding a triangle of tape around the line to form an arrow. The Wreck of the San Pedro was added as an additional attraction (and an additional artificial reef) in 1996, although partially collapsed by typhoons that have scoured it over the last decade or so, the San Pedro remains a picturesque home for turtles and white tip reef sharks. It's a popular dive sojourn for photographers. Remember as you dive the wreck that a submarine "dive-by" is a possibility, as the company that placed the San Pedro on the bottom still tours regularly with Atlantis Submarines. An encounter with a sub provides something extra, exciting, and unusual to see... more

The Ruby E began her life as the Coast Guard Cutter named Cyane. The Cyane, known as WPC-105, was built in 1934 at the Lake Union and Dry Dock Machine Works in Seattle, Washington. She was designed to intercept "rum runners" during prohibition years. The WPC boats were nicknamed the 165s for their length in feet and were supported by two massive diesel engines, which allowed for great speed despite its large size. The additional size was necessary to reach and pursue the rum runners that were operating along the entire West Coast... more
