Questions about this item:
Shopper Why Did You Choose This?
ROBERT C Awsome bag, Gone on many air lines no problem. Need to buy another for my wife.
Only travel bag I'd buy.
DOMINI Y It's big and I need a good bag for international travel.
JAIME W I have one, and got a gift for someone else.
ART R Went to a larger bag and instead of hauling 3 can now go with 2. I'm covered by the extra weight via my frequent flyer status or some airlines sport bag rule.
BROCK P Awsome for travel but not very good for every day use. I am happy with mine. Get a mesh bag for every day use to keep things from getting stinky.
PAOLA V Love this suitcase. Holds everything you and your dived buddy need to dive
Shopper Does this bag have built-in zipper-rings to lock the main compartment? Is there any way to lock the main compartment?
MATTHEW T Sorry i was not able to answer this earlier, but i was out of country. It has large Zippers that have a hole big enough to install the TSA locks. I went this way, because they have master keys to unlock them at the airport. If you are like me, there is alot of money in your diving equipment and you feel better when its secure. Love the bags and great for packing your gear and clothes without going over on the lbs.
MICHAEL M Hi Alex,
There are no locking rings on the zipper pulls or anyother way I know of to lock the main compartment. It is a very good travel dive bag and I do recommend it. It rolls easily, holds all my gear (large fin pockets) without exceeding airline size & weight restrictions.
Might want to remember that if you intend to use it for airline travel, TSA will have you to take the locks off before processing your bag and/or will cut locks off to get a look inside.
Good luck,
mike
ART R Yes it has 2 zippers on the main compartment with built in rings to place a lock through. Very similar to what you see on most luggage. Would not stop a determined thief, but what really would?
DOMINI Y Kind of. You can put a pad lock. However, don't because TSA will just cut it. I lost many pad locks that way. Just don't put anything that are too valuable!
BLAIR W Yes. They are relatively small but they are there. I don't put my regulator, dive computer or mask in the bag. I hand carry them. Bags get lost and I can buy or rent everything else.
KEVIN N You can definitely lock the main compartment with any standard Master lock. The holes on the zipper tabs are large. You can't really lock the side pockets or front pockets, however.
MICHAEL P If you're talking about those little loops connected to the zippers to put those small luggage locks through, then yes, it has those. About the same size and durability as standard luggage.
Shopper Is this bag appropriate to use on boat charters?
VALCIR G It will depends on the size of the boat, but it is a good bag for all occasions, and may be used as a backpack too.
CHERYL B Yes, it is roomy. If you are concerned about space in your room to store it I would check the diamensions. You can stand it up to save space.
ALAN R Yes, it is fine. Especially if you have two diving this will hold a set of fins on each side and gear for two.
DOMINI Y Yes ! On our last trip, week long live aboard, 2 of these show up. If it's a day trip type of boat that fits less than 12 people, no kitchen/bedroom, then it might be big. More important, this bag is so spacious and it's way too easy to pack more than airline allow. For me, personal equipments+ 1 BC and 1 set of regular, one 3mm wet suit and one 7mm hood vest will reach 22Kg.
ART R I don?t think it is, but let me state my reasons so you can decide. It does come with a shroud to put around it on a boat - I?ve never used it. #1 it?s big - no way would I take it on a fast boat in Cozumel or even a larger boat there or any other place I?ve been diving. I use it for airplane travel, because between it and a smaller bag my Wife and I can haul all of our gear. When I pack this one efficiently it weighs about 65 pounds. #2 - the wheel base is kind of narrow and it can wobble easily, that would be problematic on a boat. My recommendation is a mesh bag and a dry bag for the boat. You down pack from this bag to just your essentials. A mesh bag breathes and dries out quickly. I?ve never been able to master the skill of keeping things perfectly dry thus the dry bag. Anything fragile goes in a pelican or equivalent box, but keep things minimal and small. I guess if I was going on a live-a-board I would use it, but not for the diving I traditionally do. Hope this helps.
MICHAEL P If you're on a day boat, no, it's way too big for that. Unpack your gear and put the suitcase somewhere else for the day. Also, it doesn't have any drainage, so when you put your wet gear back inside, it won't necessarily drain. If you're on a week long liveaboard you'll be fine with it.
JOHN P It depends on size of charter...I would say for a medium size boat at a minimum and it usually fits nicely under the seat if there is room on any medium size boat or bigger. I would not take it out on a small boat. The bag is very durable and has lasted me for a number of years yet. I just dove in the keys with it this week. Best bag I have owned.
ROLLIN E This bag is big, and doesn't fold down when empty. It is a piece of luggage which holds dive gear. I'm not sure what you mean by "boat charters". If you mean an extended live-aboard, then it might work. It will hold dive gear and clothes for a single person for a week, so you could live out of the bag-if there was room to stow the thing under a bunk. As for a day trip it will hold dive gear for two or three people, so its great for rolling down the dock, putting the gear in the boat, and then putting the bag back in the car for the duration of the dive. There is no way I would try to bring this on any non-live aboard type of boat-its just too big. It would be too big for most live-aboard boats I have been on! Its great for traveling to a dive site, either by car or air. After that, I just leave it in the corner of the hotel room. It will hold dive gear for two people (watch that 50 lb airline limit!), so its great for the travel, not so great once at the boat.
SHANE C Love the bag, it is great for travel and is very tough. But it is a little large to be taken on the boat. My wife can easily get it over 50 pounds for air travel.
RICHARD A The live-aboard boats I have been on have very limited storage. I was able to store this under my bed, but kept most of my clothes in it during the trip. I would check with the charter on storage in rooms.
ROBERT C It is a great travel bag. NOT a good boat bag as you are limited to the amount of space you have on a boat and this is a large bag.
Shopper Does this bag fall under "normal" sized luggage for airlines? (ie will I be charged for an oversized bag?)
RICHARD A I have traveled to Fiji and the Bahamas with the bag. The airlines did not charge any extra fee for the bag. You can check you specific airline by measuring the length, width, and height of the bag and visiting their website or calling them.
ART R It depends on the airline. Each can have different definitions of over sized on their sites. The real issue is weight. Just returned from Cozumel and it weighed in at 66 pounds. I travel quite a bit and have status. The airilines let me have the higher weight bag. Its been a while since I looked, but Continental would let you have a sports gear bag of high weight and not charge you - as long as it was 100% sports gear, regardless of status. I suspect all the airlines are different with weight too.
SHANE C I have used the bag on dive trips and ski trips and have never been charged for an oversized bag. i love it. But you must be careful you can easily pack over 50 pounds in it.
TERRY O Yes the bag is normal size. Do be careful to weigh it before you go because you could pack well over the weight designated by the airlines. We each have one of the Mares bags for diving, use it everywhere we go and just love it. The airlines have yet to destory them, actually even injury them.
MARK Z Only if you exceed 50lbs. Which is easy to do with this bag. But size wise it's not considered oversized. It's about the weight so check the weight limit with the airline you use. BTW I have taken several trips with this bag, awesome bag.
MICHAEL P I just took it on Spirit airlines round trip and didn't have a problem. Be careful though because it can hold a tremendous amount of stuff and could put you over the weight limit. I didn't have a problem with the size though.
JEFFREY J M It is oversized. This is quite a large bag, and if you fill it with dive gear, you will have no problem going over 50 lbs. The bag itself is quite light, however, and I am really happy with it.
VALCIR G Yes, it does. You won't to be charged.
I i have Never be charged for it.
ROBERT K Hi, I took this bag to numerous places in Australia and had no problems with any of the airlines. Excellent bag, you'll like it!!!
Bob
JAMES S It falls under "normal size" no extra charge for the size. Best bag EVER!
MARK B It isn't oversized. Just watch your weight because you can stick everything in it. Big with lots of pockets. I also use it for traveling with my hiking equipment.
Now let be tell you about Leisure Pro. I ordered a "returned" one at a discounted price. They were temporarily out and they ended up selling me a new one for the discounted price. They are great to buy from.
Shopper If the two snaps on the back are for the hidden backpack straps, what's the third snap on the front for? (You can see it in the product photo on the front bottom left corner)
TAGGART L To be honest, I have never used them. There is one on each side in the same place. This bag replaced an old and very minimalist style bag of mine and I have never looked back. Mares has thought of everything and now it is obvious they have thought of something that I have yet to have a use for.
Sorry I couldnt be more helpful.
It is an amazing bag, I recomend it highly.
SHERRI G This may not be the official answer, but using that clip on the front can turn the hidden backpack strap into a side strap/handle/shoulder strap relatively easily. Really bulky to use as a shoulder strap, but a convenient strap to pull out from under places, grab onto to load, etc.
DON A I have no idea. Even thou this is a strong bag it's to big and at 10 plus lbs. Not a good travel bag.
CHAD M I purchased my bag in 2009 from Leisure Pro and wondered the same thing as it seems it isn't there for any particular reason given you already have the two buckles on the back side for the hidden backpack, I took the opportunity to use this buckle and found the male end to it from a dive shop and then put a tether on it to a bag with items that i would need quick access to without remembering which of the pockets I put the stuff in and just zipped the bag/tether in the fin side compartment for quick access. Other than that I think its more of one of those things that just make you go hmmmmmmm. I wouldnt buy any other bag but this one, I bought my wife the "she dives" model and they are great for anywhere you need or want to go, whether it be used as a backpack or pull it around on its wheels, this is the one to get. Sorry I couldnt be of more help.
Regards,
Scuba Steve
R T I think it is for the shoulder strap configuration but not certain.
