Questions about this item:
Shopper Why Did You Choose This?
JOHN V Mares is the only brand I buy
JOHN V No better gun on the market
JOHN V Sold the first one
Francisco B So powerful and fast. Even the fastest fish can't realize about the shaft coming up to them. Great penetration power, well made and easy to maintain and repair once you get the right O-Ring Kit and oil. Much faster than a rubber band gun!! I have been using Mares pnumatic guns since 1978 (Mirages & Cyranos) and will continue with the brand because it's the best!
Francisco
Sergie M Does anyone use the cyrano 70 for hunting in and around rocks? I'm interested to see if a good stainless steel 7mm shaft (not the stock one) on the cyrano would withstand hitting rocks. I'm just wondering if the cyrano would be a good alternative for the Sten. Thanks!
RICHARD S As far as I know all the cyrano guns use a 7mm shaft. I bought an 1100 model but only use it for open water hunting. The stens come with a 8mm but will also accept a 7mm. I don't know if the sten shafts are made of a different/tougher steel. I rather doubt it. I have an old pneumatic gun called a 'pull', it came with a 9mm shaft and you can bounce it off rocks to your heart's content. The thing is seemingly indestructable. I've had it over 25 years. My advice is to get a gun with thickest diameter shaft possible if you're going to banging it off rocks. Hope this helps.
Rich
JOHN V The Sten is useless for anything. You wouldn't hit a barn door at five feet.
Nothing beats the Cyrano 850. Don't buy the 700. Too short. The 7mm shaft is fine for rocks. You won't bend the shaft, you'll just dull the tip if you keep hitting rocks. Ergo, don't fire at rocks. Wait for the fish to swim clear before pulling the trigger.
Shopper How many shots can you take before you need to refill the air pressure?
PAVEL M A lot. Few hundreds. Hypotheticaly gun does not need adding air, but in real
Life it leaks a tiny bit. I have a presure gauge. Keep it 350 psi.
Cyranos are way better than csessis.
Be safe
DANIEL L if the spear guns dose not have problem you never have to fill it up again
GEORGE G I give it a few pumps in the beggining of each season. Unless there is a leak in the seals you never have to repump it.
TROY W I've shot over 50 times and it feels the same.
GRAHAM L Ive used the gun about 10 times and have never refilled it. Great gun, hard to load.
DANNY M I own 5 Mares Cyrano Pnematic Spearguns. I have had them for about 10 years. I have never refilled the air pressure on any of the guns.
HAROLD W I've used my gun on about 30 dives and fired it at least 5-6 times average per dive. I haven't pumped it up yet and it still fires great! Great gun!
TOD Z don't remember how many shots you can take, but i remember it being very fun to use. i have arthiritis in my hands fairly bad, so my husband would have to re load it for me, i think he found it very hard to re load while bobbing around out in the sea. i've since sold it, but i was successful getting dinner several times when i used it and i'm what you would call a very very new beginner
Barbie B im christmas shopping for my boyfriend... I decided on the mares cyrano 850 but I dont want to give away an incomplete present so, I also added the reel but now I dont now if I should add a shaft and tip or do they also come with the speargun. anybody now?
TROY W Mine came with a soft case, a spot for three shafts, but only came with one, an air pump, and a lazio speartip, and shooting line, and spear loader. And a rubber gasket
KARL J The guns comes with a shaft and tip, but the stock spear tips for the Cyrano guns are not great.
I would also give him a JBL tip (I like the JBL rotating bulletnose tips). If the tip you get is not made to fit a 7mm shaft, then get an adaptor so that it fits.
Also get him some sort of cord with a toggle on it to loop the gun loader around his wrist. Otherwise it's very easy to lose. In fact a spare loader would be a great accessory.
ROBERT D Don't buy a Pneumatic Speargun. Nothing but problems with this gun. I gave mine away. Get a rife or a billiard band gun. Get good reliable band type, it will last a life time.
JOSE ANTONIO E Good day. The 850 model comes ready to use: spear gun, shaft, spear tip, line, pump, and loader. But I suggest that you purchase an extra shaft since the 850 only comes with one shaft. The 970 and 1100 models come with two. If it is not too long a 970 would be a better purchase since it comes with two shafts and the price difference is small between the 850 and 970, comparing to purchasing an extra shaft. Just make sure the 970 is not too long for his fishing conditions. Also the spear tip that comes with the Cyrano spearguns is not that great, it would be a good idea to purchase a better one like the JBL #847. Just make sure that you select the 7mm thread. If you purchase a spear tip with a 6mm thread you will need a 7mm female to 6mm male adapter (At least with my Cyrano 970 I did) this adds to the expense. I hope this helps.
Barbie B wow! thank you sooo much JOSE ANTONIO, you have no idea how helpful you've been! lovely day to you and God bless!
NICHOLAS M My Cyrano came with everything needed, two shafts one was black with a screw on spear-tip and another stainless with a tahitian style head. Eventually he'll probably want to get another shaft as the ones that come with the gun do bend rather easily, but if he's careful he should be able to get some good use out of them, and since there's two, he will have a backup.
Barbie B yeah, I guess eventually -if he gets hooked up on it- he'll get an ever better speargun. this is actually going to be his first. I hope he likes it :)
MARK T A stainless steel shaft would be nice, as the included shaft will rust and permanently stain anything it touches. The tip that comes with the gun is useless. I'd replace it with something like an AB Biller or other quality product (along with the appropriate adapter).
Barbie B AB Biller? got it! Im going to do some research on it! thanks for the advice.
ROBERT H I bought this gun about 5 years ago. At that time it came with two spears. One stainless with tip and one black one with a larger tip. You boyfriend will be pleased with this gun. It's a Cannon and works well at long range and close up when set on low power. It is a bit long, but that increases the accuracy.
Enjoy!
Barbie B I really do hope he likes it! thank you for your reply :) ...sucks that they only come with one shaft now! jeje.
DANNY M The shaft and tip come included. He might want to upgrade to a harder steel shaft depending on what type of spearfishing that he is doing. You made the right choice with the Mares Cyrano Spearguns. I own 5 of them myself! Danny from NY
Barbie B wow! 5 of them!! that good, huh? !! :) thanks, I feel much better with my choice now.
Shopper is there a power reducer switch?
ATHANASIOS K It has a power adjustment switch low and high . Also has a valve that keep the balance of the power when you go down
ROGER B yes, but I never switch it off of high.
JOHN S Yes there is a power reducer switch, all though I rarely use it. I use the 28" for California Central Coast rock fish and I find it very effective.
MICHAEL R There is not a power reduction switch.
Maurice u Is this gun sold ready to be used? Other websites claim that the gun comes bare, not rigged and that it is the "old"model. Any truth in that?
ZORAN R gun cames ready and it is exelent
Maurice u Thank you, Zoran.
KRISTIAN J It comes fully charged, you do have to put the point on the spear shaft. I changed the line to the coil type for a faster reload. The air charge lasts a very long time. Good luck this is a great gun.
Maurice u This is my first pneumatic gun and I am a bit apprehensive. Thank you
Maurice u Thank you, Christopher. This is my first pneumatic speargun.
CHRISTOPHER R It is ready to use in the sense that it only needs to be charged in order to begin using. Can't remember if it shipped with actual spears or spear heads, but assuming you have those (or the product includes at least one) it is ready to use after you charge it. Mine came with the manual pump which can take a while to pump in the first charge but nothing too crazy. It will help to make a regulator system (or buy one) so you can make sure you have max psi inside for full power shots. It's also really easy to modify to connect to an air tank for filling, but the manual pump works well enough. I do believe the model has changed, but I bought mine a while back so it was new back then. It's an awesome pneumatic that has been working for me for 4+ years no issues.
VALERIY D Gun is ready to be used.
Maurice u thank you, Valeriy
Shopper ?Mares cyrano 700 is 28 inches. It will work with low viz. Longer gun will not!
DANNY M Yes, it will work in low vis. I have used Mares Spearguns for over 10 years in the murky NY warers . I own 5 of them!
jon c cyrano 700 is in inches how long? Are you sure its a 7mm stainless steel shalf? Last I bought one it was a 8mm shaft with 7 mm thread stack and to heavy which slows down the speed.....
JOHN V I'm not sure about the length as I usually buy the Cyrano 850 which is naturally a bit longer than the 700. I think mine is about 34 inches or so.
As for the diameter of the shaft, rest assured the Cyrano is 7mm. Only the Mares "Sten" is 8mm. Hope that answers your question.
RICK F I have not measured the 700 in inches but it is a 7mm shaft. I have purchased 4 of these guns for myself and friends and have been very happy. I found the 700 long enough to get the distance and power I need without being to long for reloading. I think anything longer would be a pain to reload. Out of the 4 guns purchased I have only had one break down, but would definetly purchase it again. With the exception of the one gun I have had years of reliable service out of them and am very pleased with its performance.
Shopper Which gun is better? Stem or cyrano? Would the 970 be to long for fresh water low vis? Thanks
DANIEL L cyrano is beter the shot is faster and stronger and I think the 970 is to long for low vis
Bill P We should get in some more of the other sizes in mid August
DANNY M I like the cyrano series of spearguns. They are more powerful. I think the 750 would be better for fresh water. The 970 is for bigger fish.
JOSE ANTONIO E Good day. The difference between the Sten and Mares are:
-The Cyrano has a matte finish on the barrel.
-The Cyrano has a green/yellow insert on the front sight for improved sight acquisition. The mares' is just black.
-The light blue part of the grip on the Cyrano is rubber. The whole grip on the Sten is solid plastic.
-The Cyrano uses a thinner shaft (Read "What is the difference between the Sten and the Cyrano?" below for information on this)
I personally bought a Cyrano 970 for large, clear water bodies. I also bought a Sten 58 for small water bodies. My thought was that it would be cumbersome to use a long gun in a small river and have it hit rock or dirt due to the range that the Cyrano 970 shoots. I also decided to use the Sten due to the thicker shaft for my hypothosis that it would bend less when I hit rocks.
My advise is that you should measure/guess the distance which you can see your pray and purchase a gun accordingly. Remember the accurate range for these guns is three times the length of the shaft.
Good luck.
JOHN V Hi there,
When you say "Stem" you actually mean "Sten". I have used both the Sten and the Cyrano and I can say without shadow of doubt the Cyrano is far superior. I have only used it it salt water but it is deadly accurate whereas the Sten with it's thicker shaft is not so quick out of the barrel after you pull the trigger. Also there is no need to buy the 970. The Cyrano 850 is plenty big enough for most medium size fish. The 970 might be a bit hard to load also. In low visibilty fresh water I would feel the need even more for a simple to load and fire gun like the 850. Hope this helps.
John.
AUSTIN W I'm not really sure what the difference is between the cyrano and the stem, so i can't tell you which is better. I own the Mares Cyrano 700, 850 and 970. I love the 700 and 850, for those are the ones I would choose when going out. They do everything i need them to do. I like to use the smaller gun (700) in treetops for it is easier to maneuver without losing a lot of the punch. The 970 is good but I have found it to be too much for the low vis and close shots in the AR lakes. It has so much power (even on low) that I would spend most of my time trying to get the shaft out of a tree or ground when I would miss. Also, when you move into the larger guns, it gets harder to load the gun and keeping the shaft from bending.
GEORGE G I use the 110 cyrano in 3-5' visibility without a problem. I also hunt large striped bass. The sten is much more powerful but also less accurate.
Shopper Hi, is the loader fitted into the handle?
Shopper What is the difference between the Sten and the Cyrano?
LeisurePro S The main difference is the circumference of the shaft. The Cyrano comes standard with a 7mm shaft and the Sten with an 8mm one. Smaller diameter shaft tend to travel fast through the water, but bigger diameters result in deeper penetration.
Shopper Does this gun has a power selector?
LeisurePro S Yes, you can change it to half power for use on smaller fish.
Shopper What is the range of this gun (1100) and how does it compare to sling guns?
LeisurePro S All guns will be accurate up to 3 times the length of the shaft.
Shopper will this gun lose power at depth around 100 ft. or will it work ok
LeisurePro S Works well even at 130"

In the shorter sizes, Cyrano offers maximum manageability and speed for close range and rock or reef hole fishing. All Cyrano spear guns are come standard with a carry bag. All Mares guns come completely charged for immediate use, and do not require charging between shots. The design utilizes a captive system that re-uses the charge of air repeatedly. The Cyrano 1100 and 970 models are equipped with a 7-mm (17-4PH) stainless steel double-tip Tahitian shaft with embedded lower barb. The 700 and 850 models are provided with a standard 7-mm (17-4PH) stainless steel shaft with a threaded end for a spear tip.
