Shopper so im looking to buy a speargun for the first time as i just got into diving, but i was wondering what the advantages/disadvantages of the open and closed muzzles?
JIM D I purchased the open muzzle used it 3 times, sold it and bought the closed 52, this is a great size gun for all around use, especially in close quarters or dirty conditions. I like the JBL and feel it is a quality product, it is easy to load and shoot. I normally use my longer 62 inch gun for open / clear water or for free shafting. I mounted an Intova 220 lumin light to the front underside of my 52, removed the line which I replaced with a 22 foot coil type line, now I can free shaft with it or use the coil for shooting under rocks or ledges, so I do not loose my shaft. Using the coil or free shafting is much faster than using a line. My problem with the open muzzle was getting the line attached quickly, while my buddies were shooting all the fish. The line length is to short for shooting in open water. keep in mind I have always used a closed muzzle, and could not make the adjustment. All modifications were made with items purchased from Leisure, except the parts for the light attachment. West marine tiller parts $5 worth.

Shopper Trying to decide between this gun and the JBL Elite Woody Sawed Off Magnum 53". Any opinioins???
BIJAN R both are good guns, The 52" however is harder to load (2 bands vs. 3 for 52"). I use my 52" every Sat. and Sun. for reef hunting. I had it for over 2 years and maybe 300 dives, no issue at all, Knock on the wood :)

Shopper Can i configure this model with the double bands like on the Elite model and have the range of the Elite? I do not like the open muzzle design of the Elite, that is reason fot question.

BRUCE H I've used my Woody 52 for about a hlaf year. I removed the third band (instructions come with the gun) because it was more power than I needed in the kelp. I have no complaints with this gun. Still looking for that big white sea bass though...
MICHAEL R I have the triple band version of this gun. You can configure it with one to three bands. I have shot it with one,two and three bands. I am not familiar with the elite model ,but from the experience of shooting this gun with two bands I would think it woule be plenty powerful for almost any sized fish.I wash shooting large Calico bass in the Channel Islands with a single band and getting complete through and through penetration.Hope this helps.
WILLIAM S It has room for 2 3/4" bands, although I still have mine with the 3 9/16" bands it came with. I'll probably swap them out next season for a 2 band set up.
