PASTOR GREG H I would be real careful about using it that way. Even the lowest grit might only add to your problems. Of course it depends how deep the scratching is.Is the filter plastic or glass?
You may want to consider using a great automobile swirl remover that is very mild. Pinnacle Advanced Swirl Remover and Pinnacle Advanced Finishing Polish. I would even use the best microfiber towel available.
The best and cheapest place to find these is autogeeks. You can Google it.
You would not want very large sizes but they do sell sample sizes as listed below. Just use their search engine and put in the product codes so you can read about the products.
Most of the descriptions would call for buffers but you would want to use the swirl remover first with the microfiber towel listed and follow with the polish. You can keep repeating with the swirl remover until the scratches are gone but the final step will always be the polish.
The Miracle Towel is absolutely the best microfober product you can buy.
I use all these products on my 2007 Corvette and they are amazing. I have removed scratching in the clearcoat using a buffer at high speed and they polish the car to perfection. They may cost a little more than the NOVUS Kit but they will be safe.
Concerning the NOVUS kit. I have used the least aggressive solution on eyeglasses and cell phone screens for cleaning only and it polished them quite well without scratching but you can still feel the grit. I do not believe the lowest one is used to remove scratches only as a final polish.
