Questions about this item:
Shopper On the Ikelite website it mentions that it's compatible with "most" canon housings. Does anyone have any experience on how it functions with the Canon WP-DC34 (for the G12)? Does the preflash sensor work as well as a fibre optic cable?

ALTAN Y No, the sensor doesn't always pick on the flash and the manual settings on the side didn't really help me with correcting for over or under exposure. TTL cable is far better. I'm an amateur photographer who has been through alot of equipment over the years, most of which sits in a closet. 2 strobes with TTL cable is the best, but it's expensive.

Some tweaking on photshop will be necessary but ive had great results thus way. You loose some brightness because of the lack of strobes, but you gain range because subjects outside your flashes' range will be color corrected.
Given the cost of the double strobe set up (not to mention the drag of the equipment while swimming which increases air consumption) I'm wondering if your money would be better spent getting a newer camera with biggest sensor and highest iso possible. Hope this helps.

Trey T Is there a way to block out the flash on the camera so that the on camera flash does not produce back scatter in the image but still allow the strobe to fire?
GREGORY T Yes. Use the shield you should have gotten with your ikelite housing .
If the water is full of particules you are better off to turn the flash off and use a filter. there are filters available for salt and fresh water.
ROBERT D There is a plastic shield to block the forward flash, it clips on the outside around the lens housing, seems to work pretty well... you cant block the camera flash 100% or the external flash wont trigger!
MICHAEL K yes , your housing should have come with a blocking / defuser , The ikelite web site has some available. I just use black tape on the in side of the housing blocking the front only allowing the strobes to see the flashes.
Barbara P I use an Ikelite housing that came with 2 flash diffusers. A frosted diffuser to spread out the camera's built in flash, and an opaque diffuser to completely block the built in flash, which is the one I use with the AF35.

LARRY M The camera housing should have a means to block camera flash. My ikelite has one. External flash does not block camera flash.
MARK M I just turn off the camera flash on my Canon.
MIKE D In order for the strobe to work it requires the flash on the camera to "sync" with the strobe (since there is no sync wire). If you block or disable the flash the strobe will not trigger. If you have a diffuser on your camera you will not have the back scatter that you are concerned about.
PAUL S An opaque cover for the flash comes as an attachment for this purpose. I did not use it on my recent dive trip so I cannot comment on the effectiveness.
AUDREY H yes - your housing should have come with a deflector (usually white plastic shield that attaches to housing. The deflector will deflect the flash back to the strobe while blocking the light from going forward which will greatly reduce backscatter. If you are already using the defector and still have backscatter then if may be a problem with how you are aiming your strobe.

Sara L According to the manufacturer, the AF35 IS compatible with the housing you are asking about. I researched this as I also have the same housing.
SARA T It doesn't. It is not a movie light, it is only a flash. (strobe)
The light cannot be set to stay on.
JERI M Rick, couldn't tell you about compatibility, sorry. It has the center screw attachment and work fine with our housing, wp dc28 for a cannon.
This is a strobe for still pictures, not a video light for videos.
I would not recommend this light, unless they have changed how the strobe attaches to the tray. In the picture, where the orange handle meets the black tray under the housing. This is a plastic screw that holds the strobe on the tray. The strobe is heavy enough. We left our strobe on Punta Tuniche, Cozumel Mexico, when the unit fell off. So caution, if we would of attached something else on the strobe to prevent the loss, I would say its a good deal, but this unit does not get our recommendation as a good deal.

Shopper Is the item compatible with :Sony NEX-5 & Aquatica AN-5 Underwater Housing?
MARK K I do not know. I am using it with a Canon.
MARK M I purchased my Ikelite several years ago. Flash works well with my Canon should work just fine with a Sony. Good stuff. Good price.

ALLEN K Since my camera is a Nikon, I don't feel that I can answer adequately. I also use an Olympus C3040 camera with housing, and it fits that housing also. The nice thing about this strobe is that it appear to adjust to fit many different housings. It is a nice strobe, and I wish I had this one on many of my earlier dives where another strobe was used. KEVIN S Ikelite has compatibility listed on their website for all their strobes, cases etc. As far as I recall the AF is pretty universal, but check their site.
