Questions about this item:
Shopper does it has baffle to prevent air from going out if bottom is open ended?
DON H Yes it does. No air escapes out the bottom. Ive been diving with this safety sausage for almost 4 years and its been great.
RAYMOND S It has a magnetic closure/seal at the bottom...while inflated underwater, it sits upright naturally so air doesn't go out. the seal is tight enough that you need to squeeze the tube out for cleaning and storage.
GUY A Yes, it does. I used to regularly inflate it underwater using my exhaust, and never had a problem with it leaking at the surface. After I lost it I replaced it with the standard (closed) 4' tube, as that rolls up a bit smaller owing to the smaller dump valve, and it's also a bit narrower so it only has ~12 lb. of buoyancy instead of ~20 lb. for the Deluxe version. I wanted less buoyancy so that I could put less air in it at depth and have it fully inflated when it reached the surface (this is needed for technical diving). Both work fine, but the baffled open-end bottom is the one to get if you plan to use an octo for inflation.
JOSEPH M Yes there is something in the bottom to prevent air from escaping two good breaths and this is full and won't flop over on the surface I use Tektites 4 led wand and stick it into the baffle in the bottom of this tube at night and it REALLY lights the tube up much better than a flashlight. Personally I think the green is much brighter at night
KIMBERLY L The description states, "...with lock to prevent accidental deflation as well as a larger over pressure / dump valve. This Deluxe model also features a special "No Spill" second stage inflation option ..."
Hope that helps!
JOHN P Mine doesn't and it might not be a very good idea to constrict the opening in any way that might prevent expanding air to escape at the needed velocity to keep the unit from being damaged or rupturing the seams from overexpansion as it rises to the surface. It's a pretty tought little unit, but it's not bullet-proof. If you had a soft, flexible, expandable air exhaust at the bottom that would collapse flat to keep the air inside should it tip over at the surface for any reason, that might be sufficient to maintain its flotation. You might have to buy a spare one to experiment with fully inflating it and then releasing it. ;-) The dimensions of the opening look like it should operate that way without damage as it is.
RUSSELL L The device can be filled from the bottom or from the low pressure nib, but in either case air will not exit the bottom. The bottom is also weighted so that the device sits vertical in the water.
Shopper What are the approximate dimensions of this when it's rolled up?
MIKE H Obviously, the width does not change rolled up or not. However, in the rolled up mode, it is about as big as your mask. I like the size as I have it daggling off of my BCD so I can reach down and retrieve it without looking. By the way, I bought the bright orange model which has good viz at all depths.
MARIA LUISA T Hi, when rolled up it is 7 in. long, 4.5 in wide, 2.5 in thick. It fits in my BC's pocket.
JOHN P I have an older model dive sausage that is smaller and not quite as effective as this one. This one is about 7 inches wide and rolls up to about 3 or 4 inches in diameter. I have a BC pouch that it fits into, but many BC's have pockets that may a bit small for it. I treat it as if it were just another component in my safety gear and it is less of a hassle than toting a spare pistol-grip light. With a small reel, it can be sent to the surface ahead of you so that approaching boats will be less likely to run you over and let your own dive boat locate you especially when the surface is choppy.
R T Approximately 3"x7", if it is the same as mine. Mine is orange but looks the same.
DANIEL M Slightly larger than a half liter bottle of water
ROBERT R Size is a little less than 3" diameter mostly because of the overpressure valve. It also has a small lead strip inside to keep it floating top up. The tube is 7" wide when flat, so size is 3x 7" I would buy one again. I replaced the plastic snap with a metal snap that will not break.
CAROL G The tube is about 6 1/2 inches wide and about 3" round rolled up. The hook on it allows you to hook it to by BC out of the way.
BRIAN H 3" in diameter X 7" wide.
RUSSELL L The bunle is about 5" in diameter when rolled up. It is not too bulky, and you will not really notice it while diving.
WAYNE K 5" in diameter & 8" long
Shopper What is arguably the best color for a signal tube, yellow or orange? Is one better than the other in day verses night?
LeisurePro S There really is no argument over which color is best for a signal tube (although it has been shown that people's eyes are more drawn to the florescent yellow). Originally, the colors were designed to signal different messages. Orange was used for a normal, planned ascent, while yellow signaled an emergency ascent. In the States, people use a bunch of different colors, so the meaning is sometimes lost, but some boat captains will still recognize the different in color.
