Built in 1984 as a Russian missile frigate, destroyer 356 was assigned to the Caribbean as part of the Soviet Union's Atlantic Fleet. It operated out of Cuba for years, before being retired. In the spring of 1998, the aging warship was purchased by the government of the Cayman Islands and then towed from Cuba to Cayman Brac to be sunk as an artificial reef. Years ago, before banking and tourism were big in Grand Cayman, the main industry was fishing. The fishermen would work the seas all day and return to the protection of the reef in the north sound to clean their catch. Lea Lea's LookoutThis site has two huge, magnificent fissures, about 50 yards apart, running down the face of Bloody Bay Wall. The mooring sits between two sandpits of 35 to 40 feet, which lead to the two big fissures. Like little avenues, you make your way down through soft corals and elephant ear sponges out into the blue at 65 to 70 feet.
