Lea Lea's LookoutThis site has two huge, magnificent fissures, about 50 yards apart, running down the face of Bloody Bay Wall. The mooring sits between two sandpits of 35 to 40 feet, which lead to the two big fissures. Like little avenues, you make your way down through soft corals and elephant ear sponges out into the blue at 65 to 70 feet. Down one fissure, the passage opens into a wide grotto called the Cathedral Room, aptly named for how the grotto looks when the light comes down through the top. Following the fissure down to where it bottoms out at about 100 feet leads you to an opening framed with all kinds of hanging sponges. Coming back along the outside, there are lots of little nooks and crannies and huge stovepipe-shaped barrel sponges to investigate. Sometimes you're lucky enough to see them spawn. As is typical of Bloody Bay, this site boasts a large amount of fish life. You usually see a turtle or two or a reef shark cruising back and forth in the distance. It is also said that in Lea Lea's Lookout lives a large adult spotted drum that has been residing there for years. (Nancy's Cup of Tea) Nancy's Cup of Tea is up in the corner of Jackson Bight. Starting 45 feet from the surface, Nancy's is part of Jackson Bight's sharp drop-off that starts to curl around back to the east. The sheer wall wraps around this bend with a deep gorge through it that is filled with a healthy growth of black corals, gorgonians, and spiral whip corals. In dive briefings, dive masters like to describe it as a giant ice cream cone; you can dive left or right around the shaft. Occasionally, you may see sharks, groupers, and eagle rays. The sharks here are often four to six foot Caribbean Reef Sharks and Nurse Sharks. Photographers love this site for its beauty. Marilyn's Cut has some excellent swim-troughs on this site, where two fairly deep canyons cut into the reef. Lots of yellow tube sponges along with red rope sponges dot the wall. The chimney and archway are the greatest points of interest here. The entrance to the chimney is around 40 ft and then it is 40 ft straight down. After the chimney great opportunity is to then head west on the wall around 75 ft where you can check out the large and plentiful barrel sponges. You will then come across a great photo op - a striking archway that makes the perfect frame for divers or fish hovering in the blue water. Years ago, before banking and tourism were big in Grand Cayman, the main industry was fishing. The fishermen would work the seas all day and return to the protection of the reef in the north sound to clean their catch. After years of throwing the entrails overboard the stingrays began gathering in the area on the shallow sand bars. The stingrays would feast on the free meal. The 270-foot Sapona was built by Henry Ford in 1911. She served as a troop transport for just one trip during World War I. After the war, the Sapona was used by rumrunners between the Bahamas and Florida during Prohibition. Some say she was anchored and turned in to a private drinking and gambling club or simply a storage warehouse for rum. A hurricane in the late 1920s drove the ship aground between South Bimini and Cat Cay, where she only partially submerged. Today, the Sapona is very popular with divers and snorkelers. Popularly known as The Cozumel Wreck", the Felipe Xicoténcatl, or C-53, is one of the most popular wrecks and dive sites in Mexico. The Felipe Xicoténcatl was a US-built Admirable-class minesweeper formerly known as the USS Scuffle. The USS Scuffle was decomissioned in 1962, and sold to the Mexican Navy, where she was renamed ARM General Felipe Xicoténcatl. She was decommissioned from the Mexican Navy in 1999, and donated to become a reef that very same year. She was sunk in 80 feet of water, and now rests upright on the seabed, waiting to be explored... more

A former Navy minesweeper which was later refitted and used in the Bahamas as a cable layer, the globe-trotting MV Mahi ended its floating life as a research vessel for the University of Hawaii and adds a been-everywhere, done-everything mystique to underwater Oahu. Placed on the bottom in 1982, the Mahi was turned completely around and partially collapsed during Typhoon Iwa, so it is no longer recommended to divers as a penetration wreck dive. This ship was built as a commercial tanker, but converted to fleet oiler (able to refuel ships at sea) in 1941. This is one of the best and prettiest wrecks in Truk, the coral on the masts go nearly to the surface, making this one of the best deco stops anywhere. The bridge and engine room are very interesting. This is an ideal wreck for a night dive when you can see the coral in its full glory. She was sunk by a single torpedo to the engine room. The Spiegel Grove wreck is one of the most accessible and popular dives in Key Largo. It's 510 feet (155 m) long and lies in shallow enough water so that beginner divers can dive this wreck. The Spiegel Grove, nicknamed the Spiegel Beagle, had been decommissioned in 1989 after 33 years of service. With a beam of 84 feet and tonnage of 6,880 tons, she was gigantic and perfect for an artificial reef. She had been a Landing Ship Dock so she was very broad. The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Duane lies upright on a sandy bottom in 120 feet of water one mile south of Molasses Reef off Key Largo. After being decommissioned on August 1, 1985 as the oldest active U.S. military vessel, the Duane was donated to the Keys Association of Dive Operators for use as an artificial reef. On November 27, 1987 she was towed to Molasses Reef, her hatches opened, her holds pumped full of water and down she went to begin her final assignment. On May 18, 1986, a 130 foot US Army dredge, the Corey N Chris, was sunk in 260 feet of water as part of the Broward County artificial reef program. Then, on May 15, 1988, a 226 foot freighter, the Ronald B. Johnson, was sunk as part of the same program. The R.B.J. landed, by accident, right on top of the Corey N Chris. What luck! Today, these wrecks sit upright in 260 feet of water, joined by impact at their sterns. Said to be the world's most popular dive site, Molasses Reef is kept clear by the Gulf Stream off the Atlantic coast of Key Largo. Populated with a very high concentration of animals and corals (especially star and elkhorn coral), the reef's inhabitants are a good representation of life throughout the Keys. Look for vase sponges and the sea turtles that flock to them. Twenty miles off Indian Rocks Beach you will find the rusting hulk of a 383-ton tugboat, the Sheridan. She lies within the Pinellas #2 Artificial Reef Site. The Sheridan is a fantastic wreck dive. The 180-foot tugboat lies upright and fully intact in about 75-80 feet of water. The tug lists to starboard with its prop in place. The top of the wreck can be reached at 25-30 feet.
