The 168-foot Sea Tiger sits at 130 feet below the surface of the waters on the south side of Oahu. This former Hawaiian fishing vessel has become a hulking, blue-gray neighborhood for eagle rays and home to a variety of reef species, from moray eels to delicate nudibranchs. One highlight to look for is the gigantic honu, or Hawaiian green sea turtle, which have taken up residence on the wreck. Upright and still very much intact, this is one of the best wrecks in Hawaii for penetration by trained divers. For the open water divers...more

The Wreck of the San Pedro was added as an additional attraction (and an additional artificial reef) in 1996, although partially collapsed by typhoons that have scoured it over the last decade or so, the San Pedro remains a picturesque home for turtles and white tip reef sharks. It's a popular dive sojourn for photographers. Remember as you dive the wreck that a submarine "dive-by" is a possibility, as the company that placed the San Pedro on the bottom still tours regularly with Atlantis Submarines. An encounter with a sub provides something extra, exciting, and unusual to see...more

A former Navy minesweeper which was later refitted and used in the Bahamas as a cable layer, the globe-trotting MV Mahi ended its floating life as a research vessel for the University of Hawaii and adds a been-everywhere, done-everything mystique to underwater Oahu. Placed on the bottom in 1982, the Mahi was turned completely around and partially collapsed during Typhoon Iwa, so it is no longer recommended to divers as a penetration wreck dive. But even without an accessible interior, the 176-foot wreck remains the most popular dive site on the west side of Oahu. Cruise over and around it...more

The development of the Corsair began in 1938, when the US Navy issued a request for a new single-seat carrier-based fighter. The Chance-Vought company won the contract with their unique, gull-winged airframe pulled by the largest engine then available, the Pratt and Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp; the world's fastest and most powerful engine at the time. The Corsair served with the US Navy,US Marines, the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm, and the Royal New Zealand Air Force (and later, the French Aeronavale), and quickly became the most capable carrier-based fighter/bomber of the war...more

Twenty miles off Indian Rocks Beach you will find the rusting hulk of a 383-ton tugboat, the Sheridan. She lies within the Pinellas #2 Artificial Reef Site. The Sheridan is a fantastic wreck dive. The 180-foot tugboat lies upright and fully intact in about 75-80 feet of water. The tug lists to starboard with its prop in place. The top of the wreck can be reached at 25-30 feet. The wreck is surrounded by concrete culverts and tires. Many consider the Sheridan to be one of the best wreck dives in the Tampa/Clearwater area...more

On May 18, 1986, a 130 foot US Army dredge, the Corey N Chris, was sunk in 260 feet of water as part of the Broward County artificial reef program. Then, on May 15, 1988, a 226 foot freighter, the Ronald B. Johnson, was sunk as part of the same program. The R.B.J. landed, by accident, right on top of the Corey N Chris. What luck! Today, these wrecks sit upright in 260 feet of water, joined by impact at their sterns. While this dive is still sometimes done on air, trimix is the gas of choice if you want to remember what you saw...more

We had heard from a Red Sea dive guide that the Dunraven sank when the Captain went on a drinking binge having found out that his first mate was sleeping with his wife. He would not tell the first mate how to navigate, so they hit the reef (we have since been told differently: the Dunraven caught fire and drifted onto the reef). The wreck now lies in two sections next to each other, both of which are penetrable, but there is not always an entire route through. The large brass propeller lies to the north end of the wreck and the reef to the west...more

After being decommissioned on August l, 1985 as the oldest active U.S. military vessel, the Duane was donated to the Keys Association of Dive Operators for use as an artificial reef.On November 27, 1987 she was towed to Molasses Reef, her hatches opened, her holds pumped full of water and down she went to begin her final assignment. The chimney and archway are the greatest points of interest here. The entrance to the chimney is around 40 ft and then it is 40 ft straight down. After the chimney great opportunity is to then head west on the wall around 75 ft where you can check out the large and plentiful barrel sponges. You will then come across a great photo op - a striking archway that makes the perfect frame for divers or fish hovering in the blue water. There are also a few caves and a mini-chimney to be discovered. Look out for Black Durgons, Butterfly Fish and turtles throughout the dive...more

Thistlegorm was built by Joseph Thompson & Sons of Sunderland and launched in June 1940. The Thistlegorm was powered by a triple-expansion, 3 cylinder steam engine that generated a very comfortable 365 nominal horsepower. She was one of a number of "Thistles" ships owned and operated by the Albyn Line. With her construction being part funded by the British Government, however, she was destined for war duties from the moment she was launched. The ship spent weeks at sea until they rounded South Africa and entered the Indian Ocean and points north. Waiting its turn to enter the Suez Canal...more

Located within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary is the Benwood. This 285 foot 1910 English-built ship sailed a crew of 38 with 12 rifles and one four-inch gun. The actual sinking of the Benwood, which occurred in 1942, has been a subject of much controversy. One account goes as follows: the freighter was torpedoed during World War II by a German submarine off the Florida Keys. As she sailed in search of shallower waters, she was again hit, this time by a passing ship, the Robert C. Tuttle. Five shells on board exploded, ending this ship's possibility for being salvaged. A second...more
