HMCS Yukon (DDE 263) was a Mackenzie-class destroyer that served in the Royal Canadian Navy and later the Canadian Forces. She was the first Canadian naval unit to carry this name. Yukon was laid down on 25 October 1959 at Burrard Dry Dock Ltd., North Vancouver and launched on 27 July 1961. She was commissioned into the RCN on 25 May, 1963. She was assigned to the Pacific Fleet and served largely as a training ship with the RCN and later in the CF under Maritime Forces Pacific (MARPAC). She underwent the Destroyer Life Extension Project (DELEX) in 1983. She was decommissioned from Maritime Command on 31 July, 1992. Yukon's hulk was purchased by the San Diego Oceans Foundation which towed her from CFB Esquimalt to San Diego, California in 2000. She was gutted and cleaned before being scuttled in 100 feet of water in the Pacific Ocean off Mission Bay in San Diego as an artificial reef.

The Ruby E began her life as the Coast Guard Cutter named Cyane. The Cyane, known as WPC-105, was built in 1934 at the Lake Union and Dry Dock Machine Works in Seattle, Washington. The HMCS Saskatchewan is British Columbia's most successful artificial reef. The lead ship of her class, Mackenzie was built by Canadian Vickers Ltd, Montreal, and commissioned on 6 October, 1962. Arriving in Halifax on 15 October, she spent the first five months of her service life operating from that port. Perhaps as a result of the "Cuban Missile Crisis," on 2 March 1963 she left for Esquimalt and never returned to Halifax. Said to be the world's most popular dive site, Molasses Reef is kept clear by the Gulf Stream off the Atlantic coast of Key Largo. Populated with a very high concentration of animals and corals (especially star and elkhorn coral), the reef's inhabitants are a good representation of life throughout the Keys. The Cayman Salvager now lies one mile southwest of the Nine-Foot Stake. This 187-foot steel-hulled buoy tender was built in 1937 for the Coast Guard and was later used as a cable layer. She transported Cuban refugees during the Mariel boat lift in 1979, resulting in her seizure by the US government. After being seized, she was sitting at the dock awaiting her fate when she sank unexpectedly. In 1985, she was raised and prepared to be sunk again as an artificial reef in 300 feet of water. This Dutch freighter was built in 1956 as the Nore. She was 215 feet long, had a 33 foot beam and a twelve foot draft. In 1969 she was sold and renamed Booker Trojan; in 1976 she was renamed Caricom Adventurer and then renamed once again Cari Gulf Venture. In 1986 she was renamed Windward Trader. The Windward Trader became a derelict on the Miami River and was sunk as an artificial reef on May 12, 1990. The Hollyhock was a 175-foot U.S. Coast Guard buoy tender built in March of 1937 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In 1959, she was moved to Detroit, Michigan, where she was used as an ice breaker in Lake Michigan. She later served in Miami, Florida -- also as a buoy tender -- and in the Bahamas for refueling seaplanes for the U.S. Air Force. In 1982, the Hollyhock was decommissioned by the Coast Guard and was later purchased by a missionary and renamed the Good News Mission Ship, where she went from port to port spreading the Gospel. Grecian Rocks is shaped like a half circle. The reef covers an area about half a mile long, and is inshore from the other reefs in this area. It has beautiful spur and groove coral formations that are covered with colorful corals and sponges. The crest of the reef is lined with fingers of elk horn coral and colorful tropical fish. Casino Point Underwater Dive Park is located off the southeast coast of Santa Catalina Island, less than a 10-minute walk from the Green Pier. This dive park is the country's first city designated underwater park. It was established in 1962 by the owners of the Catalina Divers Supply. The old swim platform at 55ft (the deck is about 30ft long and 20ft wide, rotted away exposing a large grid of steel and supports various sea life). Marilyn's Cut has some excellent swim-troughs on this site, where two fairly deep canyons cut into the reef. Lots of yellow tube sponges along with red rope sponges dot the wall. This ship was built as a commercial tanker, but converted to fleet oiler (able to refuel ships at sea) in 1941. This is one of the best and prettiest wrecks in Truk, the coral on the masts go nearly to the surface, making this one of the best deco stops anywhere. The bridge and engine room are very interesting. This is an ideal wreck for a night dive when you can see the coral in its full glory. She was sunk by a single torpedo to the engine room. One of the most picturesque wrecks in the Lagoon is the Shinkoku Maru; the aquatic life is astounding, and the soft corals are amazing... more

The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Duane lies upright on a sandy bottom in 120 feet of water one mile south of Molasses Reef off Key Largo. After being decommissioned on August 1, 1985 as the oldest active U.S. military vessel, the Duane was donated to the Keys Association of Dive Operators for use as an artificial reef. On November 27, 1987 she was towed to Molasses Reef, her hatches opened, her holds pumped full of water and down she went to begin her final assignment. The Sambo Reef is a collection of several reefs close to Key West. The area is divided into an Eastern area, a Middle area, and a Western area. The areas are located about four miles south of the Boca Chica Channel. If you go out to the Sambo Reefs, a pole will mark the eastern end of the reefs. This area is used for commercial and recreational diving but it is also used frequently for research purposes.
