Michael C This product is only a single card the shows the wreck HMCS Cape Breton. We carry a number of wreck cards each with a single wreck on it.
HMCS Cape Breton was launched in 1944 at the Burrard Dry-dock facility in North Vancouver, British Columbia as the HMS Flamborough Head. Flamborough Head was one of a series of ships intended to operate with the British Pacific Fleet in the war against Japan and for the re-colonization of Asian territories. While they were under construction, the Royal Navy was experiencing a severe manpower shortage. To this end, Sir Winston Churchill attempted to get Canadian Prime Minister Mackenzie King to provide Canadian crews. This offer was refused by the wartime Canadian leader for political reasons. Ultimately the war ended before the whole class was completed and several completed as merchant ships. HMS Flamborough Head commissioned into service of the Royal Navy in North Vancouver in 1945. It sailed from Vancouver and remained in active service with that service until 1952 when purchased by the Royal Canadian Navy. The ship commissioned as HMCS Cape Breton at Halifax on January 31, 1953.
Ships of Canada's Naval Forces 1910-1981 by Macpherson and Burgess stated, "She served at Halifax until August 25, 1958 as a repair ship and training establishment for technical apprentices. Converted to escort maintenance ship at Esquimalt, she was commissioned there on November 16, 1959 for service on the West Coast. On February 10, 1964, Cape Breton was paid off into reserve, but since 1972 she has functioned as a towed mobile support facility and accommodation vessel at Esquimalt.
On October 20, 2001 at 12:40 PM, The Honorable Judith Reid, MLA, The Honorable Mike Hunter, MLA, His Worship Mayor Gary Korpan and John Ruttan, Chairman of the Nanaimo Port Authority, simultaneously pushed the two detonation buttons and the Cape Breton cutting charges were exploded. Moments later a fantastic pyrotechnics show was enjoyed by several thousand boaters and ferry patrons. It was a sad, but beautiful sight, to see this mammoth World War ll Naval Vessel sink in 3 minutes and 37 seconds. The Cape Breton is the world's second largest artificial reef after the Speigel Grove in Florida! This unique card provides detailed depiction of the HMCS Cape Breton Wreck. Each waterproof card is printed on both sides, made of durable PVC plastic and is designed to be taken on the dive. They are also 3-hole punched to fit in standard log books.

The Xihwu (pronounced key' quot) artificial reef is a decommissioned Boeing 737-200 airframe which was donated by Qwest Airparts Ltd. of Memphis, Tennessee, thanks to the efforts of Air Canada. "Xihwu" is the Hul'qumi'num word for Red Sea Urchin, which used to live in abundance in the waters near Chemainus, but whose population has dwindled due to pollution and over-fishing. The lead ship of her class, Mackenzie was built by Canadian Vickers Ltd, Montreal, and commissioned on 6 October, 1962. Arriving in Halifax on 15 October, she spent the first five months of her service life operating from that port. Perhaps as a result of the "Cuban Missile Crisis," on 2 March 1963 she left for Esquimalt and never returned to Halifax. HMCS Yukon (DDE 263) was a Mackenzie-class destroyer that served in the Royal Canadian Navy and later the Canadian Forces. She was the first Canadian naval unit to carry this name. Yukon was laid down on 25 October, 1959 at Burrard Dry Dock Ltd., North Vancouver and launched on 27 July, 1961. She was commissioned into the RCN on 25 May, 1963. Popularly known as The Cozumel Wreck", the Felipe Xicoténcatl, or C-53, is one of the most popular wrecks and dive sites in Mexico. The Felipe Xicoténcatl was a US-built Admirable-class minesweeper formerly known as the USS Scuffle. The USS Scuffle was decomissioned in 1962, and sold to the Mexican Navy, where she was renamed ARM General Felipe Xicoténcatl. She was decommissioned from the Mexican Navy in 1999, and donated to become a reef that very same year. The Spiegel Grove wreck is one of the most accessible and popular dives in Key Largo. It's 510 feet (155 m) long and lies in shallow enough water so that beginner divers can dive this wreck. The Spiegel Grove, nicknamed the Spiegel Beagle, had been decommissioned in 1989 after 33 years of service. With a beam of 84 feet and tonnage of 6,880 tons, she was gigantic and perfect for an artificial reef. She had been a Landing Ship Dock so she was very broad. She was commissioned by the Navy as the Queens (APA-103) in December 1944, a troop transport ship with a rich naval history who served her country well in World War II. She ferried fresh troops into battle and cared for and shuttled the wounded from Iwo Jima. She was also part of the American occupation at Sasebo, Japan before being decommissioned in 1946. The Wreck of the San Pedro was added as an additional attraction (and an additional artificial reef) in 1996. Although partially collapsed by the typhoons that have scoured it over the last decade or so, the San Pedro remains a picturesque home for turtles and white tip reef sharks. It's a popular dive sojourn for photographers. Remember as you dive the wreck that a submarine "dive-by" is a possibility. Said to be the world's most popular dive site, Molasses Reef is kept clear by the Gulf Stream off the Atlantic coast of Key Largo. Populated with a very high concentration of animals and corals (especially star and elkhorn coral), the reef's inhabitants are a good representation of life throughout the Keys. The Cayman Salvager now lies one mile southwest of the Nine-Foot Stake. This 187-foot steel-hulled buoy tender was built in 1937 for the Coast Guard and was later used as a cable layer. She transported Cuban refugees during the Mariel boat lift in 1979, resulting in her seizure by the US government. After being seized, she was sitting at the dock awaiting her fate when she sank unexpectedly. In 1985, she was raised and prepared to be sunk again as an artificial reef in 300 feet of water. This Dutch freighter was built in 1956 as the Nore. She was 215 feet long, had a 33 foot beam and a twelve foot draft. In 1969 she was sold and renamed Booker Trojan; in 1976 she was renamed Caricom Adventurer and then renamed once again Cari Gulf Venture. In 1986 she was renamed Windward Trader. The Windward Trader became a derelict on the Miami River and was sunk as an artificial reef on May 12, 1990. The Hollyhock was a 175-foot U.S. Coast Guard buoy tender built in March of 1937 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In 1959, she was moved to Detroit, Michigan, where she was used as an ice breaker in Lake Michigan. She later served in Miami, Florida -- also as a buoy tender -- and in the Bahamas for refueling seaplanes for the U.S. Air Force. In 1982, the Hollyhock was decommissioned by the Coast Guard and was later purchased by a missionary and renamed the Good News Mission Ship, where she went from port to port spreading the Gospel.
