Of all the ships that are reported to be haunted, the R.M.S. (Royal Mail Ship) Rhone has a very unique distinction: the ship lies 35 to 80 feet underwater. The Royal Mail Packet Company commissioned the ship in 1864 as a mail and passenger cruiser between England and the Caribbean. The Rhone's iron hull was 310 feet long and 40 feet wide and was believed to be the fastest and most modern ship in the fleet. Only two short years into its service however, the ship ran into trouble just outside the British Virgin Islands...more

Years ago, before banking and tourism were big in Grand Cayman, the main industry was fishing. The fishermen would work the seas all day and return to the protection of the reef in the north sound to clean their catch. After years of throwing the entrails overboard the stingrays began gathering in the area on the shallow sand bars. The stingrays would feast on the free meal. Soon the stingrays began to associate the sound of fishing boats with food. In the late 1970s, SCUBA divers starting feeding the stingrays squid, which is one of their favorite dishes. Before long...more

She ferried fresh troops into battle and cared for and shuttled the wounded from Iwo Jima. She was also part of the American occupation at Sasebo, Japan before being decommissioned in 1946. From 1948 to 1958, she was commissioned the S.S. Excambion and served as one of the post-war Four Aces for American Export Lines...more

Twenty miles off Indian Rocks Beach you will find the rusting hulk of a 383-ton tugboat, the Sheridan. She lies within the Pinellas #2 Artificial Reef Site. The Sheridan is a fantastic wreck dive. The 180-foot tugboat lies upright and fully intact in about 75-80 feet of water. The tug lists to starboard with its prop in place. The top of the wreck can be reached at 25-30 feet. The wreck is surrounded by concrete culverts and tires. Many consider the Sheridan to be one of the best wreck dives in the Tampa/Clearwater area...more

On May 18, 1986, a 130 foot US Army dredge, the Corey N Chris, was sunk in 260 feet of water as part of the Broward County artificial reef program. Then, on May 15, 1988, a 226 foot freighter, the Ronald B. Johnson, was sunk as part of the same program. The R.B.J. landed, by accident, right on top of the Corey N Chris. What luck! Today, these wrecks sit upright in 260 feet of water, joined by impact at their sterns. While this dive is still sometimes done on air, trimix is the gas of choice if you want to remember what you saw...more

We had heard from a Red Sea dive guide that the Dunraven sank when the Captain went on a drinking binge having found out that his first mate was sleeping with his wife. He would not tell the first mate how to navigate, so they hit the reef (we have since been told differently: the Dunraven caught fire and drifted onto the reef). The wreck now lies in two sections next to each other, both of which are penetrable, but there is not always an entire route through. The large brass propeller lies to the north end of the wreck and the reef to the west...more

The Wreck of the San Pedro was added as an additional attraction (and an additional artificial reef) in 1996, although partially collapsed by typhoons that have scoured it over the last decade or so, the San Pedro remains a picturesque home for turtles and white tip reef sharks. It's a popular dive sojourn for photographers. Remember as you dive the wreck that a submarine "dive-by" is a possibility, as the company that placed the San Pedro on the bottom still tours regularly with Atlantis Submarines. An encounter with a sub provides something extra, exciting, and unusual to see...more

The chimney and archway are the greatest points of interest here. The entrance to the chimney is around 40 ft and then it is 40 ft straight down. After the chimney great opportunity is to then head west on the wall around 75 ft where you can check out the large and plentiful barrel sponges. You will then come across a great photo op - a striking archway that makes the perfect frame for divers or fish hovering in the blue water. There are also a few caves and a mini-chimney to be discovered. Look out for Black Durgons, Butterfly Fish and turtles throughout the dive...more

A Short History: Oriskany (CVA-34), an attack aircraft carrier, was laid down 1 May, 1944 by the New York Naval Shipyard, launched 13 October 1945; and sponsored by Mrs. Clarence Cannon. While still incomplete, her construction was suspended 12 August, 1947. She remained in a state of preservation until after the outbreak of hostilities in Korea in June 1950, and then was rushed to completion. She commissioned in the New York Naval Shipyard 25 September, 1950, Capt. Percy H. Lyon in command. Following carrier qualifications for Air Group 102, Oriskany departed San Diego 15 September...more
