Questions about this item:
Shopper Hello,
What is the beam angle of SL4 ?
Thx
DOUGLAS C the beam angle is ok but not particularly wide. the beam is very bright out of water, but under water it is not as impressive as other lights used by other divers. i bought 2 of them, and one of them flooded and batterries melted the first time i used it. bottom line i would not recommend it considering its price
JEFFREY H The one we have is SL4 eLED L1, not the SL4 which had xenon incandescent lamp.
I just measured the beam in air and got about 7 degrees for the hot spot and 22 degrees for the halo. Of course, there's still light beyond that, and both beams would be wider in water.
We like the narrow beam because it doesn't blind your buddy or spook nearby animals on a night dive. I think the SL4 had a wider and certainly less bright beam.
I expect this light to last the decades that the SL4 did. UK touts it as a secondary but we use it as primary night dive light.
Jeff
BOB B Beam angle, per the spec sheet I got with the light, is 8 degrees. I have found the light to be one of my favorite for free diving spear fishing, lobster diving, and just plain old general use.
Bob
ROGER W P Not sure what you mean by beam angle. It shines straight ahead like any flashlight I have ever used. It is a Great product. Amazing light for such a convenient size.
FEDERICO D Pretty narrow, I'd venture less than 10 degrees.
barney s i have a PcA model. how do i get to the batterys. i try to unscrew the lens cap to no avail. i push the little white button in and and twist.still no luck. any help would be helpful?.thanks
NORMAN H Not sure what a PcA model is but for the SL4 series you unscrew the lens cap and pull! There is an "O" ring that might be keeping it even though you've unscrewed it from the threads. After replacing the batteries, you will have to push it in first before the threads can engage to enable you to screw it back together.
Hope this helps.
DOUG M The bezel simply unscrews exposing the 4 "C" batteries. The bezel can be on very tight but should unscrew.
PETER F There's a little white button at the top. Push it to one side and slide the front plate ( includes both switch and lens cap ) up to remove.
ADRIAN S On the top of the light behind the lens cap there is a white button. That button holds the collar in place. Press the white button forward and pull the collar (the ring behind the lens cap) up about a 1/4". You'll then be able to remove the front cover.
JOHN G You will need to turn the black piece that contains the lense & bulb counter clock wise until it comes off. After that you will need to pry the batteries out. To install the new batteries I recommend installing the interior ones first, then insert the ones inline with the bulb. I hope this helps!
Arsen K My understanding is that this light is negatively bouyant. As I am trying to attach this to my speargun, would it be correct to assume it will add almost 16Oz of negative bouyancy at the end of the barrel? (i.e. making the nose of the gun sink heavily)? Its very important for me in selecting this or another light.
Thanks
SANFORD A Why not mount the light further back from the front of the spear gun? Also, consider the fact that this IS the brightlest light on the market at the lightest weight. This light has replaced my UK Light Cannon, which does weigh considerably more. If you can hold on to a heavy gun, you can support a necessary tool weighing less than 16 oz.
Arsen K Thank you very much all for the replies.
In case anyone is looking to purchase this light for the same purpose as me, I'll add the following:
I did some testing (yeah yeah... in the tub :D ) by taping a one pound lead weight to the end of the spear gun and it does not feel all that bad underwater. It does take more strain to hold the gun level but its not too crazy. Seeing as how this was done in fresh water, I did a quick calculation using salt water density and the volume of the flashlight. In sea water it should only weigh 0.53 lb which is not too bad. I tested it further by attaching my 5mm neoprene glove to the barrel and it made it neutrally buoyant. So a piece of neoprene should make it almost weightless underwater.
JAMIE W With my experience in using this light it is deffinately negatively bouyant. To answer your question with my best guess, yes, yes it would be like adding lead to the end of your gun. When I have the light attached to my BC it hangs straight down.
DAN H Yes, this light will add some weight as it is negatively bouyant. However saltwaters effect will negate some of that weight, how much I'm not sure. I've used the light several times and have been very pleased with the beam pattern (nice and narrow) and excellent penetration.
CHRIS P Yes it does sink however unless you want your gun to float it will not be that big of an issue I have had the original aL4 since 91 when I started spear fishing I recently bought this one for my wife, We use them for looking under rocks and brushpiles for catfish in lake ouchita, you simply can't beat the eled for its brightness and its very durable, but as far as weight you should not have any problems you probly won't even notice. We actually plan on purchasing two more in the future.

Whats in the box:SL4 eLED Light, Batteries, Wrist Lanyard, Quick Release Coil Lanyard and Owner's Manual The high intensity LED and incredible battery life move the SL4 (L1) to the top of the chart for international dive travel. Compact size and narrow penetrating beam allow you to see way to the back of an overhand on the wall, daytime or night. As an added bonus the SL4 is equally at home at work or around the house as well as in bad weather. You also get a free 36" (91.4 cm) Quick Release Coil Lanyard with the SL-3. It's a snap! This coiled lanyard expands to 36" (91.4 cm). Simply unhook the latch with a squeeze of the fingers and the coil is released, offering extension during use. . The eLED circuitry provides relatively constant brightness throughout most of the life of the batteries. As the batteries are nearly depleted the brightness of the LED falls sharply, but does not go out as happens with classical filament lamps. This brightness will persist for several days, making this light valuable for emergency situations. The SL4 eLED is also great as a photo spotting light or to illuminate gauges and dive tables. The SL4 LED operates more efficiently and produces more light when it is cool. Underwater, the SL4 eLED burns brighter for almost half of the battery life, due to the unique way that heat is conducted away from the LED. The higher brightness consumes a little more power and slightly reduces the battery life. The SL4's eLED Lamp produces 400 Lumens of Brightness. To reduce glare and protect the light, the SL4 comes with a Molded Rubber Bezel Cover. The Rotary Switch is easily activated with the thumb and index finger for single hand operation. The Light is powered by 4 x C"-Cell Alkaline Batteries (included) with a Burn Time of 10 Hours. The light measures 6.2" x 1.5" x 1.7" (15.75 x 3.81 x 4.32 cm), weighs 15.02 oz (425.81 g) and is Depth Rated to 500' (152.4 meters). The SL4 is available in 3 color choices, includes an Owner's Manual, Adjustable Rubber Covered Wrist Lanyard and is proudly made in the USA.
