Questions about this item:
Wei L What is the physics size of theBlue Reef Finger Spool Reel?
JEFF B it's 3" X about 1.5" thick
PAULA K Nice and small -- about 3" diameter and about 1-1/2" wide. I can fit it and my safety sausage in a pocket of my BDC
WALLY H The spool measures 3 1/16 inches diameter by 1 1/2 inches wide.
DANIEL C About the size of a tangelo
Shopper Is this spool neutrally buoyant (so a klutz wouldn't easily lose it) or negative (and disappear into the abyss)?
JASON S its slightly negative but when not in use i clip it to my BCD D rings and haven't lost it yet. i do not think you will have a problem but if you are new to spools and safety sausages practice a bit in shallower water until you feel comfortable.
Aloha,
J
LINDA C It is negative but since you should have a float attached at the surface, it is easily retrieved.
Linda
HARRY C NEGATIVELY BUOYANT; drop it and it's gone; don't know of any spool/reel that floats; why would you want it to be [+]to float away anyway?
signed, FLORIDA CAVE DIVER
CYNTHIA P Sorry, but I don't know the answer to this. I bought the reel as a gift.
MARK B Definitely negative , even without the clip
VALERIE J It's going to go down, down, down......
DEE S It quite negative with a stainless double ender and line. It is also negative full of line so that if it gets away from you when you shoot a bag it will eventually come back down to you. WIth no line it is close to neutral but still slightly negative.
JESSE S They sink like rocks. Finger spools are challenging to work with and require practice (such as when spooling up from under a throw bag). They are more forgiving in a cave environment since there is at least a floor near by.
Shopper How well did it work? Were you happy with it?
SUZANNE E WORKED MUCH BETTER WITH SMALLER CLIP
RICHARD D M Still using it. In fact I shot a bag on Saturday. Works great.
STEPHEN S The spool works fine. I use it with my signal tube. I always carry it.
DANIEL S Yeah, it works as you would a simple, plastic spool expect to work. It doesn't hold enough line for serious deco use, but for shooting a bag and doing hang stops during recreational diving, it's unbeatable for the price.
DOUGLAS C it works ok but rewinding of the string is a task. overall i'd give it 70 / 100. but i would suggest you buy one in which the metal hook is connected to a cloth tape with depth marking on it. it would make deploy and retreat of diving sausage 10 x easier.
JOACHIM M For the purpose of sending an SMB and ascent to it, it's ok. Since it is an open spool, there is no room for error.
CHRISTOPHER P Serves its purpose. Works well for surface sausage spool. It's small and fits in my BC pocket. I am happy with it.
Shopper are the spools the same size, just different lengths of line or do the spools get larger with the more line you get? Trying to decide between the 80' and 100' but want as compact as possible.
DANIEL S I consider 100' the bare minimum. Take into account that a spool advertised as 100' in reality holds only 80 anyway, and if you have even a bit of current that makes the line between you and the surface arch, and you're left with not a whole lot. You want a spool that you can comfortably shoot from 80 feet of depth. It doesn't do you much good if you shoot it from that depth and have to let go of it because you lack 5 feet of line. This kind of equipment is for use in less-than ideal situations, in which you don't want to have to worry about whether or not your line will be long enough. Don't try to skimp on the wrong end of things.
THOMAS N I believe the difference in the 80 and 100 is just length of the line on the reel. 20 feet of line doesn't take up that much more room. I think the jump in size happens at the 150 mark or so.
THOMAS R NOT SURE IF SIZES ARE THE SAME BUT THE 80' REEL IS NICE AND COMPACT.
TOMMY....
JAMES E I'm afraid that I don't know the answer to the question.
MARK K we got the 100' and that was compact and perfect for what we needed. do not know it the reels are smaller.
Shopper I'm trying to decide what to get. Why did you pick this one?
PHILIP Y This one is compact and easy to carry. I use it as a back up for my larger reel. Most of my diving is wreck diving. Where one needs a reel for penetration. Also if one misses the up line you can tie to the wreck and come up controlling your assent rate and do the deco stops properly. Either reel works for these functions but it is good to have a back up. PHIL
CHARLOTTE D I like the compact size
ALLEN S A finger spool is a finger spool. The difference between a $45 finger spool and a $16 finger spool is $29 and that is it. A finger spool should be cheap since one may have to abandon it. Doing the crossover circuit at Peacock usually forces one to abandon the jump spool at the Peanut-Crossover junction. It's better to abandon a cheap spool than an expensive one.
FREDERICK K I wanted a spool that I could keep as a dedicated SMB line. I wanted something small for my pocket and it didn't need to be longer than 100' for most situations. Also, orange line is way more visible than white. I've used it in a semi-stressful situation and it performed perfectly.
HARRY C Have been a cave diver for 15 years and use this reel for jumps. Good spool and brass clip for the money.
JANNA N Simple, inexpensive, well made. Lower profile and doesn't get in the way as much as larger ones do. Cold water glove fingers can fit through center hole for ease of deployment of safety sausage/SMB or for winding it back up again.
ALESSANDRO B It is a great kit, easy to carry all the times and unseful for deco stop and many other use like mapping areas and work in low visibility. I never dive without one mostly I do have with me 2, light and compact are perfect for normal dives.
DAVID G I have 2 spools and use this one most of the time. Small, easy to use, and great for running up buoys. Used it twice now in Bonaire on unmarked reefs to mark entry/exit points. Only downside is that sometimes you want to use the ring to connect the spool to your BCD, there's not a lot of room in the holes (note the picture - there's a lot of string without a lot of open room). Not a big deal as you can either remove some of the length of string or just be careful when you're rewinding to allow a little more room on one side. Other than that - cost and usability has been great.
PHILLIP F It compact and very user friendly.
JOHN R I was looking for a simple, straightforward design without excess bells and whistles that didn't necessarily improve functionality (only add to the number of things that can break). This reel fits the bill, and easily stores away in my BC pocket until needed. It has served me well, especially at this price point.
LARRY K My only reasoning was that I was looking for an affordable reel that was small enough to carry in my BC when I didn't want to carry my larger reel, but I wanted at least 100' of line.
Greg H What is the size of the 80' reel?
Will it fit in a BC pocket?
Thanks
PHILIP Y This reel is about 3 or 4 inches in diameter. It will fit in a BC pocket. I like this piecde of equip and would not dive without it. Except on maype shallow reef dives.......Phil
Greg H Phil,
Thank you for the information. It was extremely helpful.
Greg
WILLIAM P Yes, it will fit in most BC pockets. Mine came with a double ended clip which I use to clip to a D ring on my BC. It is much easier to get to that way.
Greg H William,
That is good to know and I appreciate it.
Greg
SETH R Yes it fits nicely. Measures approximately 3.5" in diameter x 1.25 wide.
Greg H Thanks Seth. I apprecuate your help.
LARRY K It's a nice small spool and fits fine in my BC pockets. And since my BC is a Pro QD and the pockets are close to worthless, it should fine in about anything.
Greg H Larry,
Thank you. I quess since I have a Scubapro Knighthawk it should do fine. I appreciate your help.
Greg
Andy W What are the dimensions, line lenght and thickness?
JOZSEF S Works good, compact, won't get in the way.
JESSE S Mine had about 100 ft of #24 line. The reel itself is about 3 inches across and 1.5 inches thick. You want a little bit of bungee cord to attach to the snap so you can secure it around the reel.
