Questions about this item:
Shopper My prescription is OD sphere > minus 6.0 , cycl > minus 1.75 and axis 5
and OS > minus 6.25, cycl > minus 1.25 and axis 180 . Can I get away with this mask without custom prescription for astigmatism? Thanks in advance.
JOE P I have a mild astigmatism but much stronger correction. I just got the basic lenses as close to my prescription as I could and they have been great.
ED G I'm not an eye care professional, but I would suggest getting the strongest corrective power lens they have. Looking underwater has a minor corrective/refractive affect anyway. I think what you will find is that its not perfect, but it will be so much better than you've ever been able to see underwater that it will be great.... at least that's what my experience has been. My prescription is only around -3.5, and I think I got the -3.0 lenses. As silly as it would look, I could get around just fine, and even drive with them on.
RICHARD S Hi,
These lenses were actually for my wife but she said she had no problems & could see fine, in addition I also purchased prescription masks from a different source online and those did not correct for astigmatism either and they worked out fine for me, I dove Palau & Truk Lagoon and vision was not an issue at all, everything was crystal clear... The way things appear underwater is very diffent from what they look like out of the water, astigmatism correction is not vital for underwater vision...
Have Fun!
Best, Rick
JOHN P You would be best to ask your eye doctor. During your next exam, he can show you what the standard prescription would look like. Then you can decide. Since you won't be doing much reading while diving, it may not matter. I have astigmatism too, but I'm just using the closest weaker prescription insert. With the magnification from the water, it hasn't been a problem.
MARK F By coincidence, I am an ophthalmologist. You can "get away" with a minus 6.50 in your right and left eye. But given the significant amount of astigmatism you have, your vision underwater with the TUSA sphere only lenses will not be as sharp as with a custom prescription that fully corrects your astigmatism. Also, if you are older than 45 consider under correcting your full myopia by a little bit, or putting a bifocal in one lens(on the side you keep your gauges/computer on) because of presbyopia (decreased focusing ability at near as we all get older) after that age
MORRIS K I don't remember my exact Rx but I too have an astigmatism and I don't have any problem with the stock lens. However, your Rx is much stronger that mine. I also added some dive optics to enable me to read my guages.
Peter C How do you remove the triangular plastic center piece with out messing it up? Do you pry it from the bottom at the bridge of the nose or pry it loose from the top brow section?
MICHAEL M The lens were installed by me, I had Leisure Pro install them for me.
ROBERT S First, download the instructions from Tusa if you haven't yet. (Go to the Tusa main site, click support, then product manuals, and click 'TM-5700..." under mask replacement guides). They don't give good instructions for removing the center piece but you'll want them for the rest of the steps.
DON'T pry the center piece up from either the bottom or the top. There's actually a tab on the back (skirting) side of the piece about 1/3 of the way down from the top brow that needs to be released. Gently pull the skirting away from the back side of the center piece and look in between-- you should be able to see the tab sticking out toward the skirting side. Use something non-sharp (I used a pen) to push the tab up from the bottom (bridge of nose side) to release the tab. Then the center piece can be pulled off.
HARRY A There are two small slots on each lens - I believe the one about half way down the nose was where I started with a flat blade screwdriver. There is a second slot along the bottom near the outside edge to help once you get it started. I LOVE them! good luck and I hope it helps.
JAMES S I gently pressed on mine, around the edges, and it popped out.
ROBERT C I had Leisure Pro install them for me. Unfortunately, I do not know the answer to your question
DANIEL A You will have to pry it from the bottom and very important use a small plastic stick to do it so not to damage/puncture the silicone skirt.
Tusa sells a little plastic tool but I have never found available so I fashioned my own out of plastic. Again, be very careful when removing the center piece.
Check the Tusa website and it shows how to remove the lens, under Support and Manuals.
Enjoy the diving!
Dan
Roy W how do I get -9.25 lens?
David R We're sorry as the highest we carry is -8.0
nancy L My eye doctor said to round down your prescription--if you need a -9.25, get a -9.00. Ask your eye doc to be sure.
KRISTEN G As far as I know, the lenses only come in increments of .05 and I checked out a few websites. There are some eye wear retailers that sell custom masks, but you will end up paying around $300 for them.
JOHN P You probably can get by with the -9.0 lens. Check with your eye doctor. I had a similar problem with my prescription (-5.25), with an additional issue of astigmatism. Since I'm only using the mask while diving, and don't need it for driving, the mask works just fine with the magnification. When you visit your eye-doctor, he can show you what it looks like with the -9.0.
Stephanie Z Hi, I have a Tusa Liberator Plus from about 15 years ago and would like to buy new prescription lenses for it. Will these lenses work in a much older mask? It doesn't quite look like the one in the picture.
JANIS T Sorry I don't know.
ROBERT C Sorry, couldn't help with that. I bought the lenses along with the masl and LP installed them for me. You would have to check with Tusa.
KENNETH C I don't have experience with this specific combination. However I have tried this trick before with a different manufacturer and ended up buying the new mask to fit the lenses. You could try them and if it doesn't work you would have to buy the new mask, after 15 or so years a new mask probably wouldn't be a bad idea. Sorry, probably not the answer you were looking for.
I have enjoyed my new TUSA Liberator Plus mask in Bonaire and Indonesia, it works fine for me.
ED G I bought mine in '08. I think I paid a few bucks and had them put the new prescription lenses in before shipping them to me. I'd call Leisure Pro and see if you can send your old mask back and have them put the new lenses in.
Other than that, mine worked great. No leaks.
JAMIE B I can't tell you for sure but I did notice that Tusa corrective lenses for all their different models have this same picture regardless of actual style. If you look at the picture of this model in the masks I bet it will look familiar.
DEKEL T sorry, I don't know the answer for sure, but I think it will not work.
JOHN F I would just buy a new mask....the mask is the cheapest part of the investment with the lenses being much more pricey
DANIEL A Stephanie,
Since the corrective lenses are the most expensive part I decided to buy a Liberator plus II mask and not run any risks of leaks on my mask.
It took me 5 minutes to replace the lenses with the corrective ones and I am very happy with the set up.
Liberator II mask is has some slight improvements over the previous generations, but still the same very comfortable mask.
If you need correction to read your diving computer, after you install the Tusa corrective lenses you can also stick to the glass corrective lenses for close up (reading), they are made out of plastic film and also available at this merchant. They stick with some moisture and they do not use glue so if they don't work well for reading you can peel them off from the inside of the corrective lenses.
Hope this helps.
Cheers, Dan
Shopper Are these corrective lenses for the entire lens area? I wear contacts for my distance correction, so I only need readers for the bottom. Is this available?
LeisurePro S These correct the whole field of vision. Check out Dive Optx Magnifiers (product i.d. AQUDO). They are stick on lenses for the bottom half of your lens.
Shopper My prescription is -3.25 in my right eye and -2.75 in my left eye. Since these are only in half increments should I go up or down?
LeisurePro S I would go down half. Water acts as a natural magnifier, so when you get in the water, the prescription will seem more like your actual strength.
Shopper Are these easy to self install? How is it done?
Rob S Instructions for installing these lenses can be found on Tusa's website. Go to support, then product manuals, and find it under mask lens replacement guides.
I used a slender pen as the "tool" for the first step which pushes up on a tab, then a thin screwdriver for around the frame and it worked well.
LeisurePro S Very easy to self install. The frame around the edges of the lenses pops off, you remove the old lens and place the prescription lens in the groove before snapping the frame back into place. The frame requires a bit of force to remove-- don't be too afraid of snapping it, it's pretty sturdy. After you get the frame off, it's easy as can be. If you feel like you would rather someone else do it, you can take the mask to your local dive shop and they should be able to do the switch in about five minutes.
