Questions about this item:
Shopper I am 5'11" , waist 40, chest 42, wt 210 pounds, what size should I buy?
DOUGLAS J HI
I am 5'10" 38 waist wt 230 and i have an extra large
I would try a large
CHRISTOPHER M Same size as me. I got a large and works great.
CHRIS M I'm 6'0", waist 42, chest 46, wt 250 pounds. I purchased the XL and its fits me fine.
ROBERT C I am 210 and waist 38 , 5'8' and the large fits good with way plenty to spare. EX is for the really big guys for a Sherwood Avid . Great dive vest and a little more total weight for travel . It my second Avid, very comfortable and feels good.. Big pockets too, Good price versus others on market.
Shopper Can this BCD be used with Twin Tanks?
RONALD W It is setup for a single tank.
ANTONIO J A I'm not sure. I don't dive with twin tanks.
TRAVIS A No. These bcd's are set up for 1 tank only.
Shopper how many dump valves does it have?
CASSANDRA S I purchased this BCD for my husband. There are two seperate dump valves and you can also use the integrated hose. One is on the back right rear and the other on the right shoulder.
FRED O This unit has 3 dumps: Lower butt dump. Shoulder dump, and if you pull the LPI hose it will also work as a dump valve. Great BCD!
Shopper how much lift does this bcd have?
UTHMAN E plenty of lift. this is an awesome bcd. it was recommesnded to me by my dive instructer. its the same model he also uses.
SCOTT H What size are you inquiring about? Lift capacity is dependent upon BC size; if you are weighted properly [not overweighed as many divers are] then the best fit by size should be adequate. Read product description information on this website or on the product at your local dive store. If it's not provided on this website then email Sherwood for that information by size. So, if you are a small individual would you buy and XL just for the lift?
RONALD W Hi,
I am not sure what the actual lift is, but you should be able to easily look this up on-line.
ANTONIO J A Not sure exactly. I'm 160 pounds and use it with an ever dry dry suit and 30 pounds of weight with a low pressure 80 steel tank and have plenty of lift with this BC. I have a size large.
ROY B I neve was able to use it because the top dump valve has a a bump in it that bothered my shoulder so i returned it.
ROY B i was never able to use it because the top dump va;ve has a bump i it that bothered my shoulder just trying it on so I returned it.
Shopper Is this a long bcd? Im 6'5" and weight a trim 240 lbs
Looking for a BCD that is longer then most.
CASSANDRA S My husband is 6'8" and around 350lb and this BCD is perfect for him nice and long! I bought him the 3XL
ANTONIO J A I'm 5'10" and purchased the large. I should have gotten the medium as I find this bcd to be long. To note, I'm short in the legs and long in the torso. Hope this helps.
BRET K I'm 5' 11" and it fits me pretty well. Could fit someone a little taller, but probably not specifically designed as an extra long
RUBIANA B My husband is 5'8" and this BCD fits him well, so I am thinking that it is not longer than most.
DON A I'm 6' 2" and 220 and it works well for me
FRED O I'm 6'2", 240lbs...this BCD is plenty long. With the XL, I have the shoulder straps adjusted up almost all the way. Lots of adjustment left.
BRANDON M I'm 6' 4" 235lbs and fits me great.
DUANE P I have an extra large, and it fits me good. I'm 6'4" and 210 lbs. I like it very much, especially all the D rings, dual tank straps, and back weight pockets.
JOSEPH M Yes these BCs seem to run large. Im 5'10" @ 180 and a med. is a little big on me.
ROBERT P Son is 6'7" , 170# and is comfortable with this BCD. If I were purchasing again, this being his second BCD as he started diving when 11, would and should have gone Backplate and wing as one purchase would have "grown" with him.
This BCD is NOT the best "travel" BCD in terms of size or weight either. I vote for comfort underwater.
JONATHAN L Not really sure it is long or not, but I am 6'3" and the straps come out pretty far. I would recommend it.
Shopper for the purposes of traveling, how much does a large Avid weigh?
SCOTT H Weight will depend on the size purchased. I use LARGE and it weighs 5.6#.
I frequently travel with this model and am able to roll it up tightly and secure the roll with a bungie cord which fits nicely inside my dive bag. To achieve a tight roll I remove the rear dump valve so that the nominal amount of air will be pressed out; after securing the roll with a bungie I then carefully replace the dump valve which helps create a vacuum.
RONALD W I don't know exactly how much it weighs, I've not had a chance to use it since I purchased it. I can tell you it does weigh more than my old BC. You may want to research the weight with Sherwood.
EDDIE K Without integrated weights, no more than 6-8 lbs
TERRENCE N C Too heavy and poorly made. Should buy a Cressi Travel Lite.
Shopper Hello! What's the dry weight of this BC? And I'm 5'2" and 110 lbs, would xs be the right size for me? Thanks!
ANTONIO J A I have a large and the dry weight is about 9 lbs. The sizes tend to run large. I'm 5'10" and have a large. I would have been better off with a medium.
KEITH C Interesting questions. Sizing according to the charts provided by Leisure pro was very accurate and the BCD has a good range of adjustments to tailor it to you. Dry weight will vary according to size but this is not a lightweight warm water BCD. It is heavier than the average BCD due to the heaver materials used.
I own an Avid which is easily the highest quality BCD I have seen for the money. I wanted durability and quality construction plus lots of options for weights and equipment, which is what this BCD is all about. It is best suited to cold water where weight is not the issue and being able to reach everything you want on the dive and knowing where to find it in gloves is. The stainless rings are perfect for keeping ancillary equipment where you can find it while stream lining your dive profile. I hope you find this information helpful.
BILL W I am 5' 7', 180 lbs. my avid is a large. Dry weight approx. 8 lbs. my wife is 5' 3" 125 lbs. using a Luna bc. XS
JAMES G XS should be the right size for you.
I am usually an XL and had to order a large in this as they tend to fit a bit big.
I dove this BC at the Blue Hole in Belize this past October and am very satisfied with it. Great quality high surface stability BC.
Best
Jim
Shaun V How many pounds of soft weights will fit in the CQR2 pockets? Are there two trim pockets in the back like the 07 model? Thanks
MICHAEL F 7 pounds, and there are trim pocketsin the back to even out the weight.
ALBERT S 2 x 10 lbs up front (right and left) droppable
2 x 5 lb Trim in Back (non drop)
Al S
RONALD W Each weight pouch will hold up to a maximum of 10 pounds of soft weight on each side.
Yes there are two trim pockets in the back of the Sherwood Avid BCD
DAVID L Sherwood wight pouches typically hold about 8 pounds of lead weights. (not sure about soft weights) ...Yes, it does have 2 trim pockets also !!
ROBERT L The side pockets will hold 10lbs.each and there are two trim in the back each will hold1-2lbs. really like the bcd!!
TOM J 10lbs per side on the front pockets, and there are two trim pockets on back, that close with plastic clips. Front two are droppable, trim weight cannot be dropped.
JAMES N It has two trim pockets, each of which can hold a 5 pound soft (or hard) weight. Each of the two ditchable weight pouches can hold 10 pounds. I find that 10 pounds of soft weights is a bit bulky, and actually use curved lead weights in the ditchable pouches.
KARL H There is really no weight limit for the CQR2 pockets. I haved had as much as 15 pounds in each pocket when diving with a dry suit. Yes there are 2 trim pockets on the back.
LARRY C i think 2 weights each pocket
so 16ilbs
watch the air 2 it free flows
Shopper Is there a chart for getting the proper size?
DONALD H I really have no idea... but I am 195 lbs and 6'1" and a medium is ok, but depending on my wetsuit it can be a little tight and a large is too loose.
Andrew B I am relatively new to diving; I just ordered this BCD and was surprised that it came without the actual weights included. I have a couple of questions:
1. Are weights not included?
2. If the answer to #1 is 'no', could you please point me to weights I should buy?
UTHMAN E no weights are not inclided. i dont know of any bcd's that come with weights. u can use any type of weight system, however i prefer soft weights
GRANT N Weights are not included but the weight pockets are. As far as what weights to use, you can really use any weights you want. I use weights that I made myself. Soft weights are good but very expensive. I would just use block weights. Good luck
JANE P BCD don't come with the weights. Your best bet is to price out a local dive shop for prices on weights and compare to what you might find on-line. Since your weight needs vary depending on the wetsuit you're using and whether you're diving fresh water or salt water you will want to purchase extra weights then what you used during your certification. Also, if you will be doing any vacation diving, you won't need weights because they will supply them for you. I rent my weights for any local diving I do, it's just easier for me.
DAVID L No BCD's include the weights. If you travel, the local outfitters supply the weights. If you dive locally, purchase the weights from a local dive shop where you get your air fills.. They are not cost effective to order for direct shipping.
MELISSA R As far as I know, no weights are ever included with the purchase of your BCD, and here's why:
First of all, you have choices in weights; you can get soft, hard, and rubberized...and there might be even more options out there that I don't know about. For this BC, which I have both and old and a newer version of, I like the basic hard weights that you can also use with a weight belt. They're the cheapest, they fit in the pockets, and because they have the ability to be threaded on a basic weight belt, they're a bit more versatile than soft weights (which you need a specific pocket weight belt for).
As far as what weights you need...that depends. Factors to think about include:
1. What kind of wetsuit will you be using (thicker suit, or full suit vs. shorty means you will need a bit more weight)
2. What type of water will you be diving (more weight is needed for salt water dives than for freshwater)
3. Don't forget to factor in your body composition. If you are very muscular and fit, you can probably get away with a bit less weight, and if you are not quite an ironman, maybe you need a bit more. Hopefully your practice dives in a pool and on your checkouts have helped you figure out what your basic weight requirements will be.
I would recommend that you ask your dive instructor to help you out with selecting weights for the conditions you'll be diving...then you can get an assortment of weights that will give you a range above and below to cover a wider range of conditions.
This BC can handle a lot of weight in the pockets, but it does have a weight limit, so take that into account. Any additional weight you might need can be accommodated on a weight belt. Also, this BC has a good amount of lift, so if you are a little overweighted, it can probably handle it...but that's never a great idea, so if you can get some help from an instructor, that'd be your best bet! Hope that helps!
RYAN V Weights are typically not included with purchases of BCDs due to the amount of weight each diver needs varies with each diver's body composition, equipment used, and salinity of the water.
If you need to travel in order to dive, the dive shop facilitating your dive will normally provide the necessary weights which allows divers to fly to their destination minus a few pounds in their luggage.
Otherwise, I would recommend 'Sea Pearls' soft mesh weights. They are color coded for easy identification and they quickly drain and dry.
Another consideration for dive weights is if you want to arrange your weights in subsets in order to allow you to drop only a portion of weight for and emergency ascent. This allows for a more controlled, but slower emergency ascent.
Andrew B Thanks, Ryan, I appreciate your feedback.
ROBERT P 1. No, weights are not included. The amount of weight necessary varies according to a bunch of different variables--diver body mass index, thickness of wetsuit, fresh or salt water, etc.--so it would be pretty impractical for the manufacturer to include an unspecified amount of lead. This is not a bad thing, as it would greatly increase both product and shipping costs.
2. The pockets on this BC are designed to use soft weights; ie, mesh bags full of lead shot. In a pinch, you can use hard weights like you see on old school weight-belts, but it can be a little uncomfortable. Ask your divemaster or instructor to help you figure out how much weight you need for the diving you're doing.
ANTONIO J A weights are not included. i use the weights provided on dive boats. for shore dives, i have 2-2.5kg and 2-1kg scubapro ecoweights, p/n 23-051-251, and 23-051-101.
KARL H No weights not come with your BCD. The dive shop or dive boat will usually have weights on board for you to put in the CQRs.
RICHARD B Weight pouches are included, but they are empty. You can fill them with whatever form of weight you prefer; they can hold solid lead weights, soft lead shot bags, etc... I filled mine with home made weights made from lead shot.
JAMESON J I use the soft lead weights since they fit the pockets better.
They cost a little more but are better in the long run.
This is a great bc it's very versatile I use it on
Some of my tech dives as well as normal diving enjoy
SHAUN A 1) No, I don't imagine they ever do especially since everyone requires a different amount of weight.
2) I made the mistake of buying lead shot filled bags (expensive) and ended up using old school weight belt blocks I found at flea markets. BUT, whenever I go to Cayman Brac (which is about the only place I dive) I rent tanks from Reef Divers and the weights are free to use (plus you don't wanna carry weights in your luggage). I would look on Craig's list, Scubaboard, Ebay or a dive shop and buy some used weights. Shipping makes it a little pricey so try to buy local. Make sure to get different "denominations" of weight and not just two big blocks so you can add / remove as needed.
3) I have had this BC for about 35 dives and I LOVE it.
MICHAEL H Weights are not included as your weight needs will depend on an number of factors such as: your body size and condition, your comfort level in the water, the type of diving you do (warm/cold water, fresh/salt water, drift/wreck/etc), the type of tank used (aluminum or steel), and the exposure protection you are using for the dive.
The BCD's weight system has pockets in the back for weights that can't be ditched; meanwhile the front weight pouches are ditchable. When allocating weights to the different locations make sure a high enough percentage of the weight is ditchable so that you are positively buoyant when those weights are removed. I have used both soft and hard weights with the Avid, standard sizes of either will work. In my opinion soft weighs are the way to go as they are easier to work with and I find it easier to get them in and out of the weight pockets. I own soft weighs that I use for local diving (lakes & quarries), but have done fine with the hard weights that are common on dive boats in the
resort destinations.
Andrew B Thanks, Michael.
BRADLEY M Weights are never included, look on Craigs list
RONALD W I have been diving for over 20 years and weights are never included. One reason is because you may prefer the shot type weights to the solid type weights. My prefrence for weights are the shot pouch weights. Also weights are not included because everyone requires a different amount based upon individual buoyancy requirements.
Rwoodyii@comcast.net
STEPHEN G No, weights are usually sold seperate from BC because each person requires a different amount of weight. You will want the soft pouch lead shot weights sold at many locations. They are pricey but work nicely with the integrated emergency release pouches built into your BC.
Andrew B Thanks, Stephen.
RODNEY P Weights are usually not included with a BCD unless purchased as a package. If you are going to be diving close to your home you might want to purchase your own weights, but most dive packages include gas and weights. Local dive shops can sell you the weight you need but don't travel with them. It's hard enough to stay within the weight restrictions for baggage without adding lead.
Andrew B Thanks for your feedback, Rodney.
Shopper What are the differences between the 07 and 08 versions?
LeisurePro S The only real difference is the position of some clips. Weight system clips are in the back for the 07 and the front for the 08.
Shopper Why Did You Choose This?
SCOTT H Because it fit my body and type of thermal apparel I wear.
RONALD W I replaced my older Sherwood gear which I had for over 19 years. I wanted to stick with a winner
EDDIE K Previous experience with product. No complaints, worth the money.
ROGER G Great price, although more BCD than I needed.
MIKE W Love that they have the 2xl size for bigger divers. Very comfortable and functional BCD.
