Shopper Could this be used for hauling up an extra large goody bag full of scallops? I have used the cheap plastic line holders before and they have worked fine. But the reel idea seems to be a good one.
JOE I These reels are meant for navigational, marker, and emergency uses/situations, not as a winch lifting something from the ocean floor to the surface. May be used in conjunction with a lift bag.
ANDREW B Sure it could. All you need to do is compare the line gauge to the anticipated weight of goodies.
I've used this as back up ascent line with bags, bottles and scooters attached.
BUT is it the right solution?
How about a stainless steel double ended clip. Attached to bag and bcd/harness
GARY G I've had 50lbs on it and the lock held fine... i don't know how ideal it would be to haul up something from the bottom with, as each revolution is only about 4 inches of line... hope you're forearms are ready for a workout if you are gonna reel something up from 50 feet

I own three of these now and love them. They are extremely well built and will handle a bag of scallops with no problem. While the spool itself is ABS plastic, it rides on nylon bushings and a stainless steel bolt. You should have no problems with this at all.
DANIEL S In my opinion, these reels are made for applications other than hauling load. I wouldn't use it for that.
MICHAL Z It is a strong, very reliable reel. It can haul some weight too - everything depends how heavy that thing would be. It is not designed for heavy weights - the drum is made with plastic and the reeling handle is also made with plastic, which would only hold so much weight - then - it will crack.

When exploring, divers would pay out the line and if they didn't empty the spool it would be left in the cave for the next dive. This large diver's reel comes with 250 ft. nylon 2mm line, has a corrosion resistant aluminum anodized frame, spring loaded slide gate clip, and drag system. The reel position the handle on top, which helps divers who use a handheld light to hold both the light and the reel in one hand, freeing the other hand to work the reel. Reel has large tension adjustment control knob which is easy to use with gloved hands, and helps prevent bird nesting and back lash of the line. Reel is ideal for lift bag deployment.
