victor s HI...I am considering this BC and am unsure of the size to get. I am male, 5'11" and 171 lbs. I wear a 5 mm wetsuit with jacket and integrated hood and need 17 - 18 lbs. of added weights. What size would you recommend for me?
Joe S I believe the Medium would fit you best. The large would work, but you would have a lot of webbing hanging loose from pulling it tight.
victor s hi I have doubt about this BC and the Oceanic Probe LX BC Medium ...How much weight they can carry on the weight integration system?
CHRIS D This is a great travel bc.. The rear non dumpable can hold 5lbs in each and the front dumpable can hold about 7lbs each... Not good for cold water applications but for a light wetsuit/ not heavy weight needed applications this BC is a great and really slim. I Mostly dive dry in NY and only use this bc for warm water dives/ travel bc it's lightweight and slim.
Joe S The Islander BC can take 8 lbs in each pocket in the front anbd 5lbs in each trim pocket around the cam band. Total 26 lbs.
The Probe LX is 10 lbs each pocket in the front and 5 in each trim pocket. Total 30 lbs.
SCOTT C I have had up to 18 lbs, I think that is pretty close to max. Two pockets in front are good sized, tank pockets are pretty small but functional.
Shopper I am curious about the chest strap and the waist strap. Are they made of nylon webbing or elastic? I have had rental BSs with elastic staps and they are worse than useless. Thanks.

CHRIS D Yeah, the chest strap is made of heave duty nylon webbing. The waist/ cummerbund (prolly spelt it wrong) is heave nylon and elastic to compensate for depth. Overall this is a great travel bc! I take it with me on vacations so I don't use the rental garbage that is out there. However in NY where is primarily cold water all season long, this bc is useless. Add a drysuit, extra weight, and huge steel tanks and this bc couldent even lift itself lol, but then again, it wasnt designed for that now was it? Overall I'd give it a 5 out of 5 star rating. Its Comfort, streamlined, portability, reliability, its all there for a great travel bc look no further

RENEE M I have the Islander II. It has a velcro cumberbun and web straps upper and lower. very comfortable.

Louis H I'm considering this BC or the Mares Pegasus; what are the main differences between each one of them. (Male 5'-7" 174#) Both have integrated quick release weights?

Monica s Here are some basic differences:
-Pegasus weight system is a simple pull to quick release the capacity is 26lbs and 10lbs trim.
-Islander you have to quick release a buckle on each side to dump you weights, capacity is 14lb and 10lbs trim.
-Pegasus bladder has a 45lbs lift capacity across all sizes.
-Islander sm/med has 26lbs of lift- lg/xl has 30lbs of lift.
-There are more loops and carabiners on the Islander compared to the Pegasus for more attachment point options.
-Total weight for both BC's comes in at 6.5lbs....
Those are really the main differences. Both are great for tropical diving situations, if you go to colder termperature the Pegasus is better suited due to the higher lift and weight capacity, the islander is only for tropical. Hope that helps.

sandy w I dive recreationally in the Caribbean every winter and am getting tired of renting ill-fitting gear. I am female, 5'7" 135 lbs and only bring mask, snorkel, fins and wetsuit on trips. Santa says I have 300 to spend on dive gear - would this be a good purchase? Would it be compatible with everything else I would have to rent (like weights)? What size would I need? L. C I bought an Oceanic Islander BC back in 08 and love it. I am 5' 8' @ 165 lbs, the medium fits great and works great. I also like the weight system it has, of course no weights are included. To answer your question, Yes it would be a good purchase. I own all of my dive gear.

JOSEPH H My wife and I dive recreationally every summer (school teacher)... I bought two of these. She loves hers. She's a bit smaller than you; but its a nice BC. Check your weight on the size and the amount of weight you typically carry; but I think it should be fine. The integral weights are very nice and convenient.

RENEE M I purchased an Islander BC 3 years ago and use it for the same purpose you describe. It's light enough to travel well ( all my gear weights 33 lbs.) Weights are almost always provided by the dive companies anywhere in the caribbean.
A reg would be another good investment. I'm a 200 lb. male so can't give much recommendation on size but I have been very satisfied with the Islander.

Connor G Does this BC have trim weight pockets in the rear or does it only have the standard ditchables?
RENEE M It has 4 pockets, 2 for ditchable weights on either lower side and 2 pockets
adjacent to the top of the tank for balance adjustment.

My Islander has a trim weight pocket on the tank band. Helps with any "tank rise" as your bleed off air. Have really enjoyed this BC. I am a 35 year diving veteran. Good luck.

DANIEL M The Islander BC has two rear trim weight pockets mounted on the tank strap.
DAVID B It has both, the trim weights are attached to the tank strap and your removable weights sit back a little on the bcd, which I find more comfortable.

JOSEPH H I'm 5'5"and 163. Mine fits great. I've been very happy. I think it will probably do fine. Its pretty adjustable.

I am 5' 9" and weigh 200 lbs. I purchased this model BC, size large, back in 2007. My BC fits OK. If it had been available, I would have probably purchased a Medium/Large. I am pretty sure that a Large will fit your son since he is a little taller than me.

I am 5'11" and about 160lbs with medium build. I purchased the medium size and the straps are pulled almost as tight as they can be to be snug on my body. So the large for your son should be fine.

This is a very light weight travel BC (not very durable).
Ideal only for traveling.
Mine ripped after 3 dive trips.
I strongly advise you to go for more durable BC if you are not traveling.
TANYA V I bought the small, and it fits fine for my 5'2" 130 lb. frame. It sounds like a Large would work. I hope this helps!

LeisurePro S I would recommend a 2XL. This BCD can hold 14 pounds of dumpable weight and 10 pounds non-dumpable.

LeisurePro S Oceanic redesigned the weight pockets on the Islander 2 so that they now have a clip quick release instead of velcro. The only other changes made were cosmetic-- both are still super lightweight at 6 pounds.
Shopper Is there an Air 2 type inflator available with the Islander?
LeisurePro S Here is Oceanic's combo inflator that will fit on the Islander.
Shopper Will this BCD work find in water temps down to 40 degress?
LeisurePro S No, this warm water BCD won't have enough lift to counter the weight needed for those water temperatures.

LeisurePro S No, unfortunately, the Aqualung inflators only fit Aqualung or Seaquest BCDs.
