This Dutch freighter was built in 1956 as the Nore. She was 215 feet long, had a 33 foot beam and a twelve foot draft. In 1969 she was sold and renamed Booker Trojan; in 1976 she was renamed Caricom Adventurer and then renamed once again Cari Gulf Venture. In 1986 she was renamed Windward Trader. The Windward Trader became a derelict on the Miami River and was sunk as an artificial reef on May 12, 1990. The Ruby E began her life as the Coast Guard Cutter named Cyane. The Cyane, known as WPC-105, was built in 1934 at the Lake Union and Dry Dock Machine Works in Seattle, Washington. She was designed to intercept "rum runners" during prohibition years. The WPC boats were nicknamed the 165s for their length in feet and were supported by two massive diesel engines, which allowed for great speed despite its large size. The Wreck of the San Pedro was added as an additional attraction (and an additional artificial reef) in 1996, although partially collapsed by typhoons that have scoured it over the last decade or so, the San Pedro remains a picturesque home for turtles and white tip reef sharks. The 168-foot Sea Tiger sits at 130 feet below the surface of the waters on the south side of Oahu. This former Hawaiian fishing vessel has become a hulking, blue-gray neighborhood for eagle rays and home to a variety of reef species, from moray eels to delicate nudibranchs. One highlight to look for is the gigantic honu, or Hawaiian green sea turtle, which have taken up residence on the wreck. This ship was built as a commercial tanker, but converted to fleet oiler (able to refuel ships at sea) in 1941. This is one of the best and prettiest wrecks in Truk, the coral on the masts go nearly to the surface, making this one of the best deco stops anywhere. The bridge and engine room are very interesting. This is an ideal wreck for a night dive when you can see the coral in its full glory. She was sunk by a single torpedo to the engine room. The 270-foot Sapona was built by Henry Ford in 1911. She served as a troop transport for just one trip during World War I. After the war, the Sapona was used by rumrunners between the Bahamas and Florida during Prohibition. Some say she was anchored and turned in to a private drinking and gambling club or simply a storage warehouse for rum. A hurricane in the late 1920s drove the ship aground between South Bimini and Cat Cay, where she only partially submerged. Today, the Sapona is very popular with divers and snorkelers. Years ago, before banking and tourism were big in Grand Cayman, the main industry was fishing. The fishermen would work the seas all day and return to the protection of the reef in the north sound to clean their catch. Twenty miles off Indian Rocks Beach you will find the rusting hulk of a 383-ton tugboat, the Sheridan. She lies within the Pinellas #2 Artificial Reef Site. The Sheridan is a fantastic wreck dive. The 180-foot tugboat lies upright and fully intact in about 75-80 feet of water. The tug lists to starboard with its prop in place. The top of the wreck can be reached at 25-30 feet. This 188-foot military ship is the jewel of the Marathon wreck fleet. Sunk intentionally as a dive attraction in March 1986, she now sits perfectly upright in 115 feet (35 m) of water offering 45 feet (14 m) of relief. It was launched on 7 May 1941 under the command of Kapitänleutnant Hellmut Rathke, with a crew of 49. In January 1942, U-352 began active patrols in the northern Atlantic toward the United States of America. The Sambo Reef is a collection of several reefs close to Key West. The area is divided into an Eastern area, a Middle area, and a Western area. The Sea Tiger, the YO-257 and the San Pedro were all placed on the bottom near Waikiki to provide focal points for submarine tours. All three were immediately adopted by their environments.
